Hi all,

Going through the process of reinstalling windows7 to a new pc, same HDDs/SSDs, different mobo/cpu/RAM etc.

Before what I have done is set the BIOS to RAID, go through the Intel setup to create 1 RAID0 volume between 3 HDDS and leave the SSD alone.

However, whenever attempting to do this on the new build, i end up with BOOTMGR is missing message...

My question is, what is the best way to have windows on a SSD and then have the other 3disks in RAID0?

Is it best to install windows first with only the SSD connected? Then change over to RAID in the BIOS? Whenever setting the disks to RAID beforehand, it results in the BOOTMGR is missing message...

The motherboard is the AsRock z68 Extreme Gen4.

I had same issue when i wiped the raid and unplugged the drives and installed on SSD and then plugged raid drives back in but left the bios set as raid.

I got round it by creating the raid and formatting it then unplugging the raid drives and installing windows to SSD while having ACHI mode set in BIOS. Once installed and the chipest drivers and sata drivers etc i plugged the raid drives back in and they were picked up as raid straight away while still having the bios set to ACHI which is the best setting for the SSD drive.

I think i could have also done this using the intel storage program from within windows as well by selecting the raid drives after installation but in any event make sure you just have the SSD connected to start with and bios set to ACHI to ensure all the right info is put on that drive.

There may be a easier way but this worked for me.

my ssd was isntalled after one of my arrays was set up, just after you set up the raid set the boot device to the ssd? when installing windows make sure the partition it creates is on the ssd and not the raid as well (easy to tell where it makes it, and its always done it on the same drive for me, no matter how many other hdd's i have plugged in)

ACHI which is the best setting for the SSD drive.

RAID = AHCI just make sure you have the latest Intel RST installed.

Gamble disconnect all your Hard drives and set your controller to Raid, install Windows on your SSD then plug in your hard drives and set up your Raid. This is how i do it and it should work fine.

Thanks guys, will try your advice once I get home. The last thing I did last night was to set the BIOS to ACHI with just the SSD in, and install windows to the SSD. I'll have to see what happens when the HDDs are put back in.

Short of this working, I'll try what you have suggested Matty.

Thanks!

Like i said there may have been easier ways :)
Another thing ive noticed by setting to ACHI is i dont have to wait for the raid post which makes booting quicker by about 5 secs. Not the end of the world i suppose but every bit helps.

Ended up doing it this way in the end and it worked a treat. Thanks a lot :)
