I couldn't spot an owner's thread so I thought I'd make one.

I'm thinking about buying one of these beasts but I'd like to get some feedback from MSi owners first.

Given the spec and relatively low price I'm assuming that corners must have been cut somewhere. Are there any common issues with GX660Rs? What problems have you had with yours?

Just ordered one which will be arriving tomorrow, so will let you know then. From what I gathered the 'issues' were poor viewing angle on screen, HDD possible issues making clicking noise and causing games to slow up every 8 seconds and then also the touch pad is very insensative.

But, your looking at the screen so adjust it to you and it will be fine, HDD are upgradable but some have hitahi HDD in which from what I gather dont have the issues its the WD blue drives that do. And as for the touch pad I would need to test that out to find out how 'bad' that is.

Lots of people highly recomend and love theirs and its the best bang for your buck laptop wise, for anything near the power your talking about £1600+ most probably more

The thread you're looking for is this one: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18189826 it eventually becomes the G660 including the R designation thread. The 'problems' as described by 'jfp' are the ones that exist ie: poor viewing angles are correct, but depending upon the source I've not managed to have any problems with the harddrive.

Infact I ended up purchasing an exact same laptop plus as suggested a replacement 120GB SSD. I was expecting the worse obviously, having heard of all manner of problems with the drives. I must have purchased a different variant G660R as I have NEVER had any of the problems that people have experienced in these forums. As I say, I've never even installed the SSD.

I got my GX660R from here 2nd hand, and the drive had already been upgraded.

The view angles have never been an issue for me, and I love the laptop!.

Well had mine a day but all seems good, haven't had a problem with the viewing angles and the hard drives seem fine! Yes the touch pad could require slightly less pressure to work but its nothing that you couldn't live with or get use to, all in all love the laptop, looks soo much better in the flesh! the photos do not do it justice

Its a great laptop for the price. My biggest annoyance was the hard drive stutter but I don't think they are sold with those hard drives now. Runs most games fairly well and doesn't get all that loud when gaming.

As for the touch pad mentioned above, if you go into mouse settings there's a 'Device settings' tab. If you click on that and go into the settings for that you'll be able to increase the sensitivity a tad more which makes it feel more like a 'normal' touch pad.

I'm also having trouble with the touchpad. I have to press down hard on it to get it to do anything. Adjusting the sensitivity doesn't help this because it doesn't change the pressure level required for the mouse to read any kind of movement at all.

TBH I feel like it's borderline unusable. Anybody else had this?

Replacing the screens on these guys is very easy.

Unfortunately MSI use worse touchpads in their retail models, but the supreme synaptics (with multi touch programmable functions) in their barebones :/

Just so you know people have been putting GTX580M and HD6990M cards into these machines and not having issues :D

The laptop does come with an accompanying '2 Year Guarantee' didn't it? At least I seem to recall my one did, it had a sticker advertising such upon the box and further literature inside in a package with a phone number.

I'm certain if you look through your box you'll find something in that regard. If not, perhaps someone here could dig out the relevant information?

Do you mind me asking where you got the information regarding upgrading the GPU successfully?

Thank you.

Loved for 5 months till i had to send it away for repair as the charging pin came loose, went away for a month of repairs and as soon as i got it back i had to send it away again as they hadnt put the RAM back in properly meaning the laptop wouldnt start. Should get delivered back on monday. I mean dont get me wrong its a good laptop but the issues ive had have annoyed me somewhat as for the 7 months ive owned it, it has only been in my possesion for 5 :\ anyway getting it back just in time for mass effect which is a bonus.

I would imagine the charging pin would only get loose if you dropped it  or there was a critical flaw with the soldering to the PCB.

Did it have warranty void stickers on it? Because the ram is very easy to get to front and back.

I think Ive well and truly voided my warranty after only a few months!

Swapped the screen for the B156HW01 V.4
Swapped the 740QM for a 920XM (unlocked all 4 cores)
Swapped the HD5870 for a HD6970
Swapped the 6GB generic ram for 8GB HyperX
Swapped the 120w psu for an Alienware 180w

And the Samsung 830 ssd is in the post!

Love this machine and its upgradability, oh and the mountain of help over at notebook review.

:D
