Crucial M4 64gb with operating system on.

Last night my pc loaded up with the DOS message that BOOTMGR was missing. I put in the Win 7 cd to repair but not only was there no operating system to repair, there was no sign of any images to do a system restore. The Bios also showed no sign of the ssd.

I have checked all the connectors, plugged them in and out, but have now installed windows on a normal HD. There is no sign of the SSD in device manager, yet there is still a light shining on the SSD itself. Am I to assume it has died? Thanks.

What do you mean that there is a light shining on the SSD itself?

Just checked my M4 128 (dangling from its cables outside my case) and it has no LEDs.

Have you changed your BIOS to AHCI mode - that could cause this to happen

I had a similar experience with an OCZ Vertex. It completely died, wasn't recognised by two PCs but there was still a light shining inside. RMA it.

Its likely dead, but its still worth checking a few things before the rma, but all pretty strightforward stuff

swap the sata cable, try different ports, different psu cable. Just to make sure.

Another pc would be nice to check it in too, there could still be data you want, so worth checking.

Thats 2 posts related to OCZ drives, when i would never of bought one myself :)
Crucial M4 seemed to have much better history, as did intel. This little x25m has been running great for years already.

I haven't changed anything in the Bios lately.

You still need to go and check.

You also need to do more than "...checked all the connectors, plugged them in and out". You need to swap sata sockets and a cable from another drive before you get to emailing a request for an RMA.

There is a red LED on the back of the drive, I think it's always been there.

Are you quite sure its an M4? Go check google images. They don't have LEDs. I thought you might be referring to your computer case HD: activity light, but the way you said "...drive itself" made me wonder.

Had the same thing with two OCZ drives. The RMA procedure was relatively harmless, though took longer than I would have liked.
