oil again

Cotswold wanted to put 0w30 in the 530d until they saw it was 60k and changed to 5w30 Castrol Edge Professional

BMW put Edge professional 0w30 in mine last week as they have done every time I have had it done at 3 different dealer groups. Perhaps its just that 5w30 was the correct grade for your car anyway. I think its only recently that Castrol have done al LL04 0w30 I think and your 530d has always required LL04 so would presumably have had 5w30 when new.

Nope, it had 0w30 from new, and throughout it's last two oil changes. It's been changed now to 5w30, not that it really makes a drastic difference at that weight. If anything, I would assume it's more to do with the petrol vs diesel.

Perhaps Simon can advise - I'm pretty sure there wasn't an LL04 Castrol Edge 0w30 when your car was new in 2007 - the previous Edge 0w30 was only LL01.

Simon will know for sure!

Either way I find it very unlikely a BMW main dealer has selected oil grade based on mileage - and anyway, 60k is hardly the sort of mileage at which one considers a change of oil grade surely?! Perhaps 160k but... 60k? They put the same 0w30 in mine as they've always used and it's 3 times the mileage of yours :p

There was an EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30 which was LL04. You are right to notice that EDGE 0W-30 has moved from a LL01 to LL04 formulation.

0W is fine, that particular one is no thinner than a 5W just it has better cold performance hence is a 0W.

I can't see anywhere to suggest Mobil 0w30 is either LL01 or LL04. I can get this a lot cheaper than Castrol Pro

It's Mobil1 0w40 that's the BMW approved one, IIRC.

Surely if your car has just been serviced you don't need to buy any more oil for.. well.. 15k miles? The M57 doesnt use oil really.

Dandle says 0w30 :(

It's just for future reference when I can take it in and save some ££

Also, is there *really* any difference between 0w40 and their 0w40 OMGTURBODIESEL range. Both are Fully Synth, what else do they add to the TD oil, if anything.

Actually looking at halfords its 5w-30 ESP. I'll have a look at a service receipt and see which grade they used last service.
