2 x HD7970 CF and... problems. I'm fed up. Please help.

Bit late of a reply but here goes ............

Error 0x116 Can be ... Low IOH (northbridge) voltage, Gpu problem (pretty common with overclocking gpu or raid/sli configs)

If you run into it again with new card (scanned and think you rma'd one gpu ?) try fiddling with NB voltage (ICH or whatever it maybe termed in your bios)

I feel your pain mate, I am tri-fire and have given up with card 3 for now, but for 2, I have a working solution.

Format Drive.
Fresh install on win 7 64 bit and ALL updates.
Install the 8.96 feb 14th drivers.
Disable ULPS.
Done. Everything works fine with Xfire and Eyefinity. AT LAST!

Thats why I stick to 1 card as I like my pc to run without probs, heat and messing with settings all the time.

As some ppl say, multiple cards/gpus are only good for benchmarking. Also taking a quote from a guy " You would need ati/nvidia to spend hrs and hrs with game manufactures on every game to make the game(s) work flawless and get the best performance out of multi cards or gpu. Atm card manufactures are getting multi gpus working the quick way with games,,, Its like making single core progs/games use multicore cpu,, yeh it works but performance could be much better.

I will only buy multi gpus when you can't buy single gpus anymore, cos then the both card and game manufactures will have to work together so games run flawless with muti gpus, cos if not, it will be like world war 2.

Plus Thats why the bench marking progs run so well with multi gpus cos the they have been properly coded to take full advantage of multi gpus.. But there will be a time where multi gpus will become the norm and games will run as good as they do with single gpus today.

I suspect I will be too old to hold a mouse unaided by then.... LOL

lol stu- Can you map an l6 on a 2wd cos using a gt3071r,
Or would I be better off with an l8?

My car will be ready from paint in about a few months. So thinking of bringing it up to you.

We only use up to 55s on a L6 so would be far better off going L8 or P8 mate.

But yeah I feel for ppl thats spent £600+ on multi gpus, and there having nothing but trouble or are not getting the performance as they expected....

Ive been there, spent £600+ on 2x nvidia 6800GTs and had nothing but trouble, and the problem is when you've spent that kind of money on cards, it would crush you if you have to remove 1 of the cards, so you put up with all the probs and hair pulling regardless, and the all time your thinking, what a waste of money.

For me, it was once bitten and never again:D

That was me last night, £1300 worth of cards and a £300 mobo to run them =
sat night after night for 2 weeks trying to figure out why the BSOD and pain when I was playing crysis and battlefield all night whenever i fancied just fine on my old 4970 X2.

Hurt me to take that crossfire bridge off and leave it off. :(
Why do we bloody do it?

Why do we do indeed...Like I say to ppl why get crossfire/SLi as all games will run perfectly fine with 1 highend gpu, I dont get it? But there you go I fell into that trap too, but I guess you think 2/3cards, it will last donkies yrs?

£1300 on cards,, oh mate I am sorry:mad:

For me its benchmarking, I love it. Sad... but honest. LOL

Ah, dont feel sorry for me mate, well, not yet anyway... the week is young and the screwdrivers are back out. LOL

Conversely, there are plenty of us who run multiple cards (me 2x5850 and then 2x6950) who have no problems at all.
I'm sure the 7970 problems people are having are just down to a brand new generation, and crossfire drivers not being mature yet. First adopters of all technologies often have these kinds of problems.

6800GT, I think we've come a long way since then when it comes to SLI or Crossfire...

Got two GTX 480's powering 2560x1440 and they are doing a fabulous job, no problems with drivers whatsoever! Only problem I had was keeping them cool, my previous case, Cosmos 1000, couldn't keep them cool enough.

Ditto - I had two 5870s, and the only problem was the heat. If I didn't put all the fans to 50%, it would artifact and then crash.
One GPU is simply easier.

Check your Catalyst control centre settings- make sure all the 3D settings etc are set to "use program settings", rather than any form of forced processing. Sounds like the cards could be clashing with Windows a bit.
That said, you obviously know what you're doing with a PC so you've most likely been through all that anyway...
Knock down all settings in your games and then gradually build them back up one at a time- sometimes if a driver ain't quite right, anti-aliasing can cause some odd effects.

Hope you get it sorted, by hook or by crook!
Jon.

Basically if you fork out loads for something, you want it to work as it should. But if you buy cheap stuff, its not the end of the world if its a tad rubbish..

But this is what I dont get, ppl spending hundreds and maybe in the 4 figgure sum on crossfire/Sli and it dont always do the job its ment todo. But a £50-£300 single card/gpu you can guarantee to work as it should. Something is just not right their somewhere, dont you think:confused:

I know what Id go for everytime,, But saying that I wouldnt mind messing about with crossfire/sli, to see what numbers I could get, but for games its a tad pointless as no game runs even slightly chuggy without multi cards or gpus and even more so now as most games are ported rubbish. Before you say it,, if you use more then 1 screen for gaming, buy the the fastest single gpu card thats out, as Im sure it will still run fine without multi gpu's and a hell of a lot cheaper too, I bet.

Edit: Na, the more I think about sli/crossfire, the worse it gets, as you just adding more things to go pair shaped, plus the motherboard might not get along with the cards, let alone the games not liking it.. Keep it simple guys.:)

I have not posted for a while, but just to let you know I have solved all problems.

No blue screens, no crashes, no issues at all. I got my 2nd card back, and everything is running like a dream.

My eyefinity running:

Thanks everyone for the great support. It was very helpful for me to go through that nightmare.
