:D

I ended up deleting my world last night. Had decided to go exploring and got totally lost on the way back. Did find a random little village, which a creeper that had been following me took a chunk out of seconds later. My health was already running low at that stage, but then another 4 creepers showed up and blew me sky high.

Lost all my armour, tools and crafting materials, so decided to ditch it and start over. Now I honestly cant be bothered to make anything.

Yeah see my edit. I would suspect all the plugins will have to be heavily changed to work with the mod api when it's out. Although I'd rather they got it out sooner than spent 10x as long trying to make it backwards compatible.

Ah yes. Damn your ninja edit :p

I'm hoping that they'll just release a quick and dirty (but still working/stable) 1.2 for now and then the next MC release will have the new mod API built in.

I'm hoping this. I don't believe it though :)

Play on the LinkTart server and I'm sure you won't have issues quite as bad as this :)

Meh. Its my own fauly really. I should have left markers to help me find my way back, or build a road to follow or something.

The stuff I had already built wasnt worth saving anyway. Just a big stone house with a not quite symetrical roof and a rather basic sandstone pyramid.

yeah playing on a server makes this a non issue really.

You could also run your own home server and join it each time you play
that way you can manage your spawn loaction and roll back damage
with the right plugins that is.

So you'd rather have a random collection of tracks that only go to the outskirts of spawn, which then have to tiptoe around everyone else's plots to avoid getting in the way ? Not to mention all the unsupported tracks that snake across the sea, I thought we weren't supposed to have one block sky walkways
All it needs is for everyone to build an X shape tunnel under their plot with some torches, doesn't even need tracks to start with :)

When I first started I went to the railway, got totally confused at what track went where so got onto a random one, first attempt went out of the station, turned right and then stopped after about 5 seconds.
Second attempt got me stuck in some circular loop whilst still not leaving the station :( I gave up and walked to the edge of the map myself.

So now I just walk everywhere and camp in a hole if I don't make it back before dark. Even just being able to get a short distance NSEW would help. The teleport thing still feels like cheating to me.

The only difficult bit is getting everyone to use the same co-ordinates so they will all connect properly, and some kind of naming system so it's obvious which direction you are travelling.

I really wish they hadn't changed the North South thing around, what was so wrong about the sun rising in the East, it makes navigation so confusing if you are in a new area and can't rely on the stars.

No, I don't mind as the ones that I've seen look fine, underground ones would just create more work for the community and I have the feeling you wouldn't bother to help the people making it.
Why make more work for a community build we already have? If you're bothered about the floating walkways/tracks then build pillars.

I am sure Fran was only wondering if it would be possible to do this - I don't think it was a criticism on how the current system works

ATM the minecart tracks are very much under construction, and the construction workers (edit, added) work on it when they can :)

I do like the idea tho, but I know on this server we have a mix of miners and builders, so if we had a full underground track, I think it will be Swiss cheesed very quickly by :p

Why not contribute to the railway by making tracks instead of asking other people to set up long tracks to go to (inevitably) one build?
I'm not suggesting long tracks going anywhere, I'm suggesting if everyone makes an X shaped track under their build, then eventually all X's will join up

I'm looking at the ones I see on the map and they wiggle all over the place ? Even when there is nothing in the way they still take a few changes of direction to get there.

To build a realistic viaduct you have to dig out say 9 blocks for every block of track, haul it to the build location and then erect support pillars every 20 blocks (which still isn't being done and most appear to be floating one block affairs :().
To build it underground you just need a 2x1 block hole and whatever you feel like making at an intersection or station.
Essentially the work performed is the same.

and I have the feeling you wouldn't bother to help the people making it.
I'm happy to make a X tunnel under my build, what's the big deal in that ?
I'm quite far from anyone else at the moment so it would require others to move in nearby, but if nobody does then I don't mind extending it a bit to reach the nearest station.

I'm not making more work, I'm suggesting the planning of future work in order to best benefit a community. At the moment people are just randomly linking up to the nearest line when if they just built an X then it they would benefit people in all four directions.
The pillar requirement is in the server rules, so it's not me suggesting this.

In any large city plan, infrastructure goes underground because sooner or later somebody wants to build something but finds a railway track in the way.
Just look at all the squiggles around spawn and it doesn't even extend 100 metres.

I don't particularly like minecarts, they don't fit in with my theme but other people like them. On my last server I tried making a system of canals but the update broke it and boats in Minecraft are useless.
However I do very much like doing things in an ordered way, so to see somebody snake a floating line through the nearest forest, even if I can't see it, it is going to grate a little.

If there was a plan made at the start then I'd be happier, even if you go ahead and build it overground on a 10,000 block tall viaduct, so long as it goes N-S or E-W in one big straight line then OK, it's all those disorganised wandering lines and pillars every kilometre that make me sigh.

Either way I'm far enough away not to see any of this, I'm just pointing out the fading opportunity to plan something big now, because in 6 months time it is going to be too late to fix any of this and it'll just look like the London underground.
