I've been using Boxee for a few years now and i can't fault it. It seems however Boxee have abandoned it for PC and are concentrating on their stand alone box which sucks for me.

I'm aware that there are still places i can get boxee such as http://boxee-for-computers.googlecode.com but i was wondering what other contenders there are out there!

I just tried XBMC and Plex and they were both awful! Boxee finds all my tv shows and films, cross references them with IMDB and then puts them in a list. I can filter out films I've seen leaving me with films I've yet to see.

Unless i was using xmbc or plex wrong they don't seem to offer anything anywhere near as good as this. Are there any contenders out there>

Does it do the things i like though? Filtering out films i've already seen etc?

I use Windows 7 Media Center, with the MediaBrowser plugin, and an old copy of MetaBrowser running on my WHS machine to get data for video files.

The other question, of course, is that if you're happy with Boxee, why stop using it? Just because it's not actively developed, and you're not looking for anything different, it doesn't automatically make it a bad product!

Well it can be sluggish at times and I'd like to know if there is something better out there. If there isn't something better than I'll stick with Boxee, I'd like to know though.

MediaPortal - works preety much straight away and very customisable if you want. I use it as my htpc client

Win 7 MCE and media browser here I use media browser for TV shows and data and then MY movies for MCE as I like the parental controls in my movies.

Don't like the other solutions, besides both the above work flawlessly with Xbox media extenders.

I use XMBC with the transparency skin and you can filter by watched/unwatched, not sure about the normal, confluence, skin but you should be able to do it on that too.

Unless something changed in the Eden release, it's always been possible to hide Watched movies/shows in XBMC even with the Confluence (standard) skin.

Utter rubbish.

I can't speak for XBMC as I haven't used it that much but I make extensive use of Plex.

It quite happily downloads metadata for films and TV shows from the various sources online. It will also give me a visual indication whether something has been watched or not in the listings and will let me see things that are unwatched.

Sounds more like you didn't spend the time to configure the software properly and look at the information they provide for how to name your files so they are picked up correctly (particularly for TV shows).

Does XBMC/Plex allow streaming to other devices on the network. i.e. Laptops/TV's/Android Phones or Tablets/Apple Phones or Tablets.

Or is there a special app that will connect to XBMC/Plex on a media server.

Mediaportal does all this and there's a plugin to allow viewing on phones/tablets

Plex has apps for Android and iOS. It isn't a DLNA server so cannot stream to devices using that protocol but I believe it can stream to some LG and Samsung smart TV's using apps (there's a section on the Plex forum which has sub-forums covering those types of devices).

What I do like with the latest Plex version is they have introduced the myPlex functionality which means that I can configure my Plex server to talk to the myPlex cloud service and then use the iOS app on my iPad to connect and browse my library and playback files from anywhere. I can even share my server with other users if I want (which I don't as it would knacker my upstream bandwidth).
