Sports Direct Arena

Lol at the fan who sprayed the new sign on :)

I respect what Cashley is doing but I would rather be £10mill worse off with my own stadium name.

No, neither Ashley nor Sports Direct have paid for the naming rights. They claim that they've renamed it the Sports Direct Arena to show the value to a potential partner. That's nonsense though; the reality is that they've tried to sell the naming rights for a while and failed so rather than go without, Ashley might as well get some benefit out of it himself by giving his company free exposure.

And he has every right to do it given that he owns the club and given the position they are in it should generate some goodwill.

No-one is saying it wont for-ever be known as St James Park to the fans but clubs better than Newcastle have moved to better stadiums that have been sponsored and they have managed to see the bigger picture.

When you make up the £10m difference you can probably justify that.

Are you serious?

The history and name that goes with it is known and always will be known as St Jame's Park.

No amount of money can justify that change. It's just another ploy to try and make some pocket money for Ashley.

Some fan's there really aren't words for.

I'll give you this huge hint, your second line sums it up. The history and name will always be known.......... so what on earth matters about putting another name on it and making THE CLUB some money, what you've written is entirely accurate........ which is what makes it completely and utterly unimportant if they can stick a sponsorship on the stadium and make your team some money.

Think of it like your shirt sponsor, does sticking "nick's *****'s" or, you know, Virgin Money" on your shirt change the fact that you are Newcastle Utd? No, but you don't mind that little money grabbing scheme?

Then your last line, so far Ashley has put 100's of millions into the club, he has taken zero money out of the club, your club would have gone bankrupt by now without him putting that money in........... and you accuse him of trying to generate pocket money for himself.

Arsenal fans, including me, are rather angry that we pay the HIGHEST, usually by a massive massive margin, for tickets in the league, we have the HIGHEST gate receipts in the country, we make 100's of millions a year, and Wenger spends this money, the club spends this money, the fans pay for it, and there is no return in success and the team has gone backwards while the fans directly themselves have been paying 50-60mil more a year out of their own pockets to watch the team be destroyed.

Ashley has saved the club, put them in genuine contention for 4th this year, in a miraculous 2 year turn around that is basically completely unprescedented, and you have the balls to accuse of him of "another" ploy to take money out of the club.

He could take 300mil + out of the club and still not have broken even.

drunkenmaster,

1. That's basically just the same as saying I am going to change my name to tinky winky, everyone knows me still but heck lets just say I am called tinky winky. Heck why were at it lets change the Barclay's Premier League to the Fruit Pastille league :p

2. Sponsors come and go who cares about that, every sport has sponsors. And can you quote me ever saying I liked or disliked the new sponsor?

3. Newcastle would never of being relegated if Ashley, Lambias and Wise were there when we did, because of that money is lost straight away.

4. Despite doubts about Pardew initially, he has put the club in the position we are today, thanks to getting rid of the crap players and layabouts, and bringing in some quality players.

Changing/selling the Stadiums name is a way to generate more money. Whether any made money goes to the club or Mike Ashley is beyond the point, the name is worth more.

I see the renaming has been discussed in the Commons, as below. Interesting that Virgin's Chief Exec has concerns about the rebranding - wasn't aware of that. For me, its just about the history - surely you can't put a price on 120 years. On this basis, lets rename Big Ben the Timex Tower and generate a few extra pounds for the UK.

That this House deeply regrets the decision to rebrand the historic home of Newcastle United Football Club, St James' Park; condemns the corporate vandalism perpetrated by the clubs owners in removing the name “St James’ Park” from the stadium; warmly endorses the now famous front page banner headline of the local Evening Chronicle ‘St James' Park and Always Will Be’; notes that the Chief Executive of Newcastle's new shirt sponsor, Virgin Money has added her concerns about the rebranding and hopes that others will follow her example; notes that Newcastle City Council have debated and agreed a motion stating that the Council have no plans to change any way-finding signs which bear the name St James’ Park, rather than the name of Mike Ashley’s business; and urges Mike Ashley the owner of Newcastle United to reconsider his decision.

As a Boro fan I'm gutted that the stadium has been renamed. St James' is part of English football and renaming it is just ridiculous. Agree it's like renaming Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, even Old Trafford.

If OT was renamed (The AON Arena or something) there'd be absolute uproar.

It's just the way the world is going, it's a playground for the obscenely rich and corporate giants.

I'm surprised Red Bull haven't purchased a Premier League team and changed their name yet. They've already got 2-3 football teams worldwide as well as buying an F1 team and hiring the best car designer and making Ferrari/McLaren look like mugs.

I might be wrong but I'd be very surprised if they owed any of these sporting entities, surely they're just the sponsor which includes naming rights

Edit; wiki says I'm wrong.

Yeah they bought them:

FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian association football club, based in Wals-Siezenheim. Their home ground is the Red Bull Arena. The club was known as SV Austria Salzburg before being bought by the Red Bull company in 2005 who renamed the club and changed the club's colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white.

The team was a founding member of MLS (1996), but has gone through several name changes. The team was originally known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars through 1997. From the 1998 season through the 2005 season, the team was known as simply the MetroStars. On March 9, 2006, the team was sold to Red Bull GmbH, leading to the team's current name.

McDonalds FC, Tesco United etc is the future. :p

Be thankful it's only the stadium name Mike Ashley has changed... so far... ;)
