Valve said to be working on a 'Steam Box' console

IF it existed, it'd be a Windows box. Valve would know the build of the box so they could label the games on Steam to say they meet the requirements. STEAM BOX COMPATIBLE. And could even label different versions of the box, XYZ game is compatible with Steam Box version 2 and above, etc etc etc.

For people like us who can build our own PC's it's not a great idea, but the majority of people out there can't or won't do that so there is a market for systems like this. It's not a console it's just a way of dumbing down PC gaming.

Well that's how I see it anyway. ;)

I don't understand what they're trying to achieve at all. It's just a terrible, awful, rubbish idea.

If this is true it's a terrible idea. Why would joe-public choose a steam box over a traditional console? It would be more expensive, would have compatibility problems as new games will require higher specs, and (presumably) require the majority of games to be downloaded before they could be played, removing the instant-play appeal of consoles.

It would be as successful as the CD32.

There was an interview with Gabe not long ago about if they need to create new hardware for the market, they will.

Don't see why anyone would be negative about it, more competition is good. If it fails it fails, I rather see something come out than sticking with what we have.

If they do this right (easy to set up, fast to get into games, a bit of leeway for hardware, affordable price) then this could be a really good thing, both for PC gamers and gamers as a whole.

It would increase the number of active PC gamers - so developers will invest more time/money in PC versions of games and even PC exclusives (where appropriate).

It would also introduce a download-only way of playing full games on a console-type system (which makes sense as download speeds/usage is rapidly increasing), which is a welcome shift, though installing from a disk would likely still be available - as it is with current steamworks games.

If it runs EA Origin and all it's games it's just a windows machine, it's literally a PC.

Yea, it will most likely just be a windows 7/8 machine, but running a 10 foot user interface style overlay which comes up once you boot in offering you to go into steam, origin, web browser, windows desktop etc. Therefore, gamers can jump quickly into games (especially if it uses a small SSD as a boot drive), but you can also use it like a proper PC if you wish. At least, that is the way I would do it.

That's the demo machine they took to CES in November to pitch the big picture mode (for TV playing).

While it could all tie in together, it's not a photo of the prototype Steam box. It's just a small form PC that they took to CES. :p
