What is a hot hatch....

Sort of, not that it doesn't make it a hot hatch, more like:

If I wanted a fast-family car I may consider a Focus ST (or RS if the budget permitted)

If I wanted a hot hatch I'd buy a Golf GTi

You are now surely taking the Michael? :p

You'd choose a car famed for being bright orange, with orange seats, a 2.5l inline 5 turbo that drinks fuel and has plenty of daft bodykit elements as being your 'fast family car' but for a 'hot hatch' you'd choose the understated Golf GTI, barely indistinguishable from a 2.0TDI if not for a few badges and some bigger wheels?

OKEY DOKEY THEN

I'm not sure you know how this all works? A Focus ST and a Golf GTI are direct competitors as hot hatches, and I'm sorry, but no claims of 'subjective' or 'opinion' to the contrary will change that fact. It's like me trying to claim that a Ferrari 612 is a station wagon - I can, but I'd be wrong, and to continue to seriously claim it makes me an idiot.

I would say the current generation GTI is a 'hot-hatch' but it's too refined and accessible. It's not really surprising really, seeing as they're mostly driven by middle-class housewives to the gym and Tescos.

However, VW have hit the nail on the head with the GTI Edition 35. Relatively, it is a hooligan. It has more aggressive style tweaks, a sportier exhaust note and it's one of those cars that encourages you to rev it to the red line - It actually has a different engine to the standard GTI. Whilst it isn't noticeably quicker than the standard GTI it feels like it needs to be worked harder and in terms of character it's a different league. It is also refined and comfortable, but far more of a Jekyll and Hyde than the standard GTI.

I don't see a problem with my choices, the ST might be famous for it's ABSO looks but they come in other, less obnoxious colours.

And yeah, I've seen RS's being used as family cars plenty of times

Tommy, why must you categorize the owners of every type of car? GTR owners are Chavs, 4x4 drivers are Tory Toffs, and now GTi drivers are middle-class housewives. It really is quite bizarre. What kind of person drives a Mini?

No it doesn't, you're implying it's all new or totally different, there's a few tweaks at most.

[Standard GTi] but it's too refined and accessible

[Edition 35] It is also refined and comfortable

But you have never seen a Golf GTI used as a family car???

Golf GTI = hot hatch

Focus RS = family car

Yep, makes perfect sense to me.

Not to my recollection, no. Only ever see 1 or 2 people in them

So basically, you define a Focus ST as a family car because when you have seen them they have had more than 2 people in them and you define a Golf GTi as a hot hatchback because when you have seen them they have only ever had 1-2 people in them.

REALLY!?

Just how I how see them, not asking for you to agree. I've always seen Focus's as family cars, largely due to the fact I know a lot of people who have kids who own Focus's, I only know a few people who own Golf GTi's and none of them have kids.

Explain how, based on my experiences, that theory is invalid

The way you see them... is wrong.

Because it is a family hatchback .In exactly the same way that Golfs,Civics,Mazda 3's, Seat Leon's are.

The GTI, Type R, MPS, and Cupra models being the 'hot' versions

Erm...since when was a hot hatch (or any other 'fast' car) categorised by how many people are sat in it?

Does that mean, using that logic, that my old mini is a family saloon? Just LOL. :o
