Why do people smoke?

I've never done it so I don't know. The smell is enough to make me walk the other way though it is so disgusting. I think if you had any respect for your body you just wouldn't do it.

It's impossible for me to explain as I do a lot to look after myself & am in Great shape for a 46 year old but my Brain just seems to switch off to the Dangers & the bad effects it has on me. :o

Glasgow Universiy are claiming that because of the smoking ban in 2006, premature births (and the defects which they cause) are down.

Since Scotland introduced a ban on smoking in public places in 2006 there has been a 10% drop in the country's premature birth rate, say researchers.

They believe this is a smoke-free benefit that can be chalked up alongside others, like reductions in heart disease and childhood asthma.

It's by no means conclusive, but it's good to see that there is a basic link and food for thought for mothers who do smoke.

I did give into alcohol due to peer pressure, but never touched the tobacco or weed.

How people who will do absolutely everything that their peers do yet still manage to survive in this world amazes me, I should get popular somehow and start advising teens / young adults that jumping off tall buildings and surviving will make you cool, and is the only way to be accepted as a cool awesome guy or gal by me.

Wait .... forget about the needing to be famous part, I'll just say that anyway for the lulz :D

I started because I was young and all my friends were doing it and I wanted to fit in - the same reason most people start I reckon. Not really to look cool, moreso to avoid being 'different'. Needless to say, I'm a bit less worried about that sort of thing nowadays. Plus, I knew plenty of adults that smoked despite the warnings, so I figured it couldn't be as bad as they say, right?

I'm a bit reluctant to say that I enjoy it as I'm aware that I only enjoy it because I'm addicted, but when you're there, it really can be pretty enjoyable! Plus it breaks up the working day very nicely.

But do I wish I'd never started? Too bloody right.

My Mum was a 20 a day faghead from the age of 16 but when she was 50 gave up overnight and total respect to her.
She is now 75 and suffering quite bad from an illness called COPD which was caused by smoking all those years ago.
So smokers, you might as well carry on because you've already done the damage.

actually medical experts say if you stop by 30-35 and stay smoke free 10 years you should eliminate any possible damage. its a shame im 37 lol.

you could argue to picked the most damaging one. alcohol does more damage to society than all drugs and ciggies combined.

how many stoned people (who werent schitzos anyway) go scrapping on fri/sat nights? they are too busy spending £20 on munchies from the 24/7 shops! :)

I would imagine it is for the same reason as why you drink.
+1.

I first smoked because I was simply curious, for a while it provided a nice feeling each time & was relaxing.

After some time the "relaxing high" is replaced with an all around anxiety, which is diminished back down to normal levels by smoking.

At first you smoke to feel better, then you smoke to feel normal.

I gave up when I realised that it wasn't giving me peaks, just returning me to how I felt before I ever started.

Massive waste of time & money with the benefit of hindsight & I wish I never had started (but glad I quit a few years back while still young)

I smoked from the age of 18 to 38...i gave up last sept and since then i havent touched a cig...it was hard going but i had champix tabs which helped me but i suffered from a few side effects but after a month of being on those tabs, i kicked them to the curb.

My dad smoked from the age of 16 to the age of 55 then gave up, hes been smoke free now for about 5 yrs so kudos to him...he used to smoke about 20-30 a day.

Dunno why i started smoking, peer pressure as most of my friends at school were smoking so thought it would be cool to do so. Took me a long time to give up, nearly 20 yrs but in the end i did it and am glad i did as im saving more money and my health has got much better now. a lot of the times i smoked, i did it out of sheer boredom really but now i look back and think WTF was i thinking lol.

I didnt know that at the time, and only realized after I started.

Me on Alcohol was not good. It was a godawful wretched mess of yuck that was just .... I wouldnt recommend touching it with a bargepole :D

Turned out I also had a balance problem I didnt know of at the time that made it infinitely worse than anything else, but I got social acceptance from being almost perma drunk for a year and a half.

I'm not starting an anti smoking thread or one to judge, but I am quite interested as why smokers actually smoke.

I admit I have tried one myself, it tasted awful, made me cough and my clothes smelt like hell until they went through the wash. This is my own personal opinion, and I respect that of a smoker.

I can some up with many reasons why you shouldn't, but none why you should. Since they are very expensive, there must be a reason.

Please educate me as I'd like to understand it from your side

oh, and before anyone says addiction....you aren't addicted until you smoke a few

Thanks

- It makes me look cool
- Make my breath smell great
- Makes my clothes smell great
- Women love the fact that I do
- It's dead cheap
- Is healthy for me

Need anymore reasons?
