BREAKING!! PETER MOLYNEUX LEAVES LIONHEAD

Agree - in my opinion he's never been responsible for a truly great game (or even a really good one), so I think he's been way overhyped over the years.

Heck - we all have good ideas!

Populous (1989) (designer/programmer)
Powermonger (1990) (designer/programmer)
Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods (1991) (designer/programmer)
Syndicate (1993) (producer)
Theme Park (1994) (project leader/lead programmer)
Magic Carpet (1994) (executive producer)
Hi-Octane (1995) (executive producer)
Dungeon Keeper (1997) (project leader/designer)

Really?

Yeah I'm glad you posted that up :D People seem to think he only created black and white or fable :p

This, how is he at all overrated? Just look at some of the titles he's been involved in.

It's well known that nobody likes working with Microsoft Game Studios, their biggest gem (Bungie) even bought themselves back out.

Thats what I thought, but didnt know the details in case I was just making it up. What happened to Bizarre Creations (PGR people right?) I know they are defunct but they do a Bungie too?

When the best argument is that at least its better than working for EA/Activision, you kinda worry...

It's well known that nobody likes working with Microsoft Game Studios, their biggest gem (Bungie) even bought themselves back out.

You aren't taking in to account that the people at the top of Bungie, there from the beginning, were likely bored of making Halo games and probably want to create something new.

You've pretty much said the same thing as I did.
Microsoft Game Studios wanted Bungie to continue making Halo games but they decided to say no and bought themselves out so they could do something else.

As a result, Microsoft Game Studios have now formed 343 Studios, and they are not even trying to hide it this time - it is a studio dedicated to making Halo games. It's even in the name (343 is one of the main antagonists of the series).

The Bungie executives as you said were bored and that's why they bought themselves out. It's also why the Rare guys and Lionhead guys left their positions after decades of being there. You had to toe the MGS line, be it endless Halo games or Kinect shovelware. There's only so far you can go to fulfil your dreams and your ambitions and only so much you can take. If I was one of the guys who worked on Goldeneye then told I'm now consigned to making Kinect knockoffs, I'd be straight out the door.

The point I was alluding to was that you seemed to be basing it solely on Microsoft being bad to work with.

They've bought out Developers who were creating good games in order to have them as an in-house entity to keep building the franchise. It creates first party exclusives and good franchises can sell consoles and bring in great money. I'd do exactly the same if I was Microsoft and Nintendo and Sony aren't any different. Even if the Producers who masterminded leave, you've got the basis all their still. Let's not forget either that they sold their business to Microsoft, by doing so they agreed to the terms and conditions. Nobody forced them to sell to Microsoft.

While some people from the outside might love the idea of working on Fable or Halo, and be bemused as to why you would leave, it's still just a job and is like any other business. People will go elsewhere for the money, or because they've exhausted their opportunities, bored in the job and want to try something new.

The only difference with the likes of Peter Molyneux against that of other Producers is that he's a 'name' in the games industry, so it's going to get far more publicity with him moving.

To feel you need to leave the company you setup from the ground doesnt appear to be a light decision (let alone buying yourself back out) - it cant help but reflect poorly on the corporation that bought you; or perhaps maybe your decision to be bought out was wrong in hindsight.

There quite a lot of grey between those 2 points though and if it was an isolated developer Id leave it at that, but MS being the common thread it makes you wonder if things arent so black and white. Whatever it is MS losing first party creative talent is a big loss, something Im amazed they couldnt prevent as they arent that gifted when it comes to first party devs...

Well thats just the thing, You not liking the games doesnt mean the games werent a massive success or Great.

I could happily say Fifa\Halo\Crysis\Forza arent great games(In my opinion)

That does not change the fact they were massively successful, and all gave things to the gaming industry previously unseen.

Well there's no accounting for a lack of taste :p they are mostly widely regarded as excellent games, of their time obviously, but several of them genre defining.

To say there's no great games there, even if they aren't to your taste, is a bit naive really. There's far more to those titles than most games of the last decade.

How anyone can say Peter Molyneux hasn't helped create any great games is beyond me

Populous, Powermonger, Syndicate, Magic carpet, Dungeon keeper, Dungeon keeper 2 are some of my all time favourite games! They beat the hell out of most of the garbage shovelware around these days! Cod 10 or a new Magic carpet or Dungeon keeper game? I know which i'd get more excited over ;)

I guess most of the general populous just have no taste in games :p
