Which car and why?

I'd most likely take the E34 M5 as I've always loved the look and attraction of them.

If I was a little older and wanted to waft then the E38 would be the other option.

Not sure if 300 miles a week is wise in an old M5 though :(

I'm trying to be realistic here.

I'd want a car that I know I could easily afford to fix, one that wouldn't cost appreciably more than my EP3 does to run which pretty much rules out any of the beemers there.

My shortlist:

Happy feel good car - Audi 100S. On a hot summer day with the windows down this would be hard to beat. However, no aircon, crap heaters and lack of any creature comforts would rule this out.

Realistic sensible car - Opel Monza. Probably the cheapest to keep in a good state of health out of these 4, but it's a bit of a munter and has no aircon.

Slightly nearer the wrong end of the scale - Merc 190 Cosworth. Now you're talking. All the bells and whistles I'd want, and not a ridiculous V12. Good performance, and not too bad for my ~10-12k per year. Not too bad to maintain?

Possible at a push - BMW 635 CSI in Royal Blue. Probably my favourite car out of the 4. Fuel costs might kill me, as may general running costs associated with maintenance.

So I'd probably happily end up with the 190. If running costs were no object, then the E34 M5 for sure.

I'd have that. Lower it a little bit, leave it as it is apart from that, lovely.

I very much like BMWs of that era. Handsome.

It was a toss up between a 635csi Highline (particularly the black one with the brown/beige leather) or the e34 M5. As much as I'd love an E34 M5, LHD would be a pain in the backside around London and I'd always be 'disappointed' it wasn't painted in one of the violet colours (You've gotta love Purple cars :)), so the CSI it was...

Then I spotted the B12...

The change will be spent on a fancy flap exhaust that altered the engine note from 'thunderous V12' to "Hang on, is the engine on?" quiet at a touch of a button and the absolute best black leather interior I can find. That would then be colonized for good measure .

Why can't I be rich? :(.

It is an 11,000 mile completely standard example, it'll be fine.

The reputation for them blowing up almost entirely comes from boys whacking up the boost with no thought and then blaming the car when it all goes terribly wrong.

having owned a couple of well cared for R5GTTs back in the 90's i remember ownership all to well, driving along one eye on the rear view mirror watching for bits of trim falling off and one eye on the temp gauge watching for impending HG failure. stupidly fun cars when their spot on :)

I think a lot of people are missing Fox's point of it being a daily driver.

I love the e32 B12, its an outstanding classic, but would / could I run one properly as a daily driver? I doubt it.

Stock e38's are pricey enough!

Only just realized the miles on the B12, 117k. Daily driving a hand built high compression V12 well into the six figures is a risky proposition, even for me.

Alpina B12 for me, car only gets used 1 every 2 weeks now so no worries on fuel and it looks great, that or the M5 but LHD is what is putting me off. Loving the fact the the site is great, photos brilliant etc but then the B12 is running 2 Falken tyrs and 2 Fullruns.. classy!
