Lucky to be alive

you've clearly never been out in a genuinely "quick" car then... Humour me. What would you consider quick?

Genuinely quick is GT3RS. A modified 500hp Evo X. modified 600bhp RS6. New GTR skyline. That sort of car.

Pretty quick is GT2's, most astons, SL55's, M3's. That kind of thing.

"Brisk" is Focus ST, Curpa R. They ain't "quick" by a long stretch.

Genuinely quick cars eat 600cc bikes for breakfast, challenge 750's and hold onto litre bikes.

Those are FAST cars that genuinely compete with supercars. I've been out in all sorts of fast cars. 600bhp Evo, Ferrari 355, 996 GT2, 997 GT3 RS, Ariel Atom.... those are fast cars.

A Focus ST, Astra VXR, Megane RS etc are QUICK cars.

Erm, that was kind of implied by what I said, obviously if your car is a piece of you know what then its a good idea to keep a safe distance but if it isn't you can follow the car in front at less than 2 seconds and you will be fine, its totally dependant on the cars in question and people should be able to use their own judgement.

Oh dear. I'm guessing you drive something German...

1 car length at 70 mph I would say that's pretty damn close.. Im usually 1.5 or at least 2 car lengths , obviously subject to conditions. What would u say is a sensible distance ?

Say what now?
Breaking distance at 70mph is around 100 meters, or 26 car lengths...

so now we're arguing the toss about the words fast and quick, and a difference. Fair enough. Our definitions are clearly different. I don't consider a focus ST to be quick by any stretch of the imagination. It's brisk. One step above nippy... ;)

I wouldn't even really bother with a focus ST (or VXR etc) if I were looking to have a play with someone else out and about. But then I drive a quick car - what you'd consider fast - so I guess it's all relative.

Would love to see an M3 beat my 600cc bike ;)

There's a reason we call them Porsche eaters.

It's not a Skyline! I hate when people call them Skylines :(

Me too, the GTR used to be a trim level of the Skyline but now its a totally separate car, the 350z/370z have more in common with the current Skyline than the GTR does.

Its like when Toyota stopped making the Supra Celica trim level of Celica and released the Supra as a separate car.

Never mind eh, drive on the car in fronts bumper to stop people changing lanes in front of you. Don't forget to convince yourself that what you do is right by implying only saddos would do anything different.

BS.

Keeping approximately a 2s gap is something I do all the time. There's also little chance of someone passing me on the inside because I tend to keep left wherever possible.

There is no need to brake to maintain a gap either, you just let it happen naturally - if someone fills the gap in front of you they are likely to be going faster than you anyway so you just have to wait a little bit and use some judgement.

Driving properly isn't anything like as difficult as people make out in threads like this!

Its nigh impossible to maintain a decent gap, yes, your quite right, some moron will come along and slot into that gap. Infuriating, certainly - especially in a six axle HGV!!

It does not mean that you simply give up & go with the flow, you try to keep that gap, your life can ,in some situations, depend on it! - I'm not saying thats your view, but some could perhaps think "going with it" is the option you prefer through the "can't beat them, join them" attitude I read from your post.

Correct me if I'm mis-interpriting you by all means! :)

Fox - I didn't say it was okay to tailgate and nor do I. What I was pointing out to those quoting the two second rule and the Highway Code is it is not as simple as it sounds during real motorway driving.

DRZ - I'm thirlled to bits that you have no problem keeping a two second gap between you and the car in front and that you find driving easy. I'm sure these skills you have gained and your high level of driving experience will serve you well in avoidng accidents in the future, but for the rest of us... However, I'm not sure the residents of Thornton Hough and Willaston would agree looking at last years YouTube video.

R420LA6X2/4MNA and Robbie G - Again I'm not saying tail gating is acceptable what I was trying to say to those internet driving experts that in real life it is not that simple or clear cut as they make out. As your post lends support to.

What I would say though is when I see a couple or three cars acting like the OP describes, experience tells me to either back off and get away or past them incase something happens.

LOL - so someone dangerously stops me overtaking them when out for a shakedown run of my new build and all of a sudden I'm some kind of tailgating mentalist that doesn't know how to behave on a motorway? Riiiiiight...

You continue to drive up the arse of everyone on the motorway because you're incapable of falling back to a safe distance, just don't start a thread like this when you have a near miss or an actual accident.

So Ross now that you have a 'quick' car, you consider cars like the ST to no longer be quick? I guess it depends on your point of reference, but considering something like an ST is faster than the majority bog standard cars, I'd consider it to be quick. I think you need to consider a more wider view on this, rather than comparing cars to yours.

If I went out tomorrow and bought a GTR I wouldn't post on forums claiming cars I consider to be fast, to now be slow, just because my current car is faster.

Hang on one minute...

Several people questioned at the time your shakedown run as you like to call it. I did not say you don't know how to behave on a motorway or call you a tailgating mentalist.

Yet you decide that I
drive up the arse of everyone on the motorway because you're incapable of falling back to a safe distance....

and your evidence of my driving has come from where? first hand or a video? Please read my posts again before forming a conclusion and passing advice such as..

just don't start a thread like this when you have a near miss or an actual accident.
