Anybody else detest Holidays?

I think flying economy really doesn't help, the start and end of your holiday is just a cattle market, which sours the start and end of your holiday. Unfortunately low cost has become king, because most of us can't afford to fly business or first.* The experience however is so much nicer, especially if you are flying long haul. No/few queues to check in, go through security, quiet, comfy lounges, staff welcoming and helping at every turn and much more space when on a plane.

Instead we all fly from Luton with Ryanair, which means long queues at the check in desk, half an hour or more at the woeful security, stampeding to get a good seat and then being cramped up in a tiny seat for several hours before being turfed out at the other end... :(

But yeah OP, you're still doing it wrong, once there, if away from the major tourist centres most places are lovely, especially if there is something active to do!

*Just to clarify I've only been business twice, both times company paid!

I am 41 and have two grown up Daughters. Money isn't a problem (too a degree). I just find the whole thing "Not Relaxing". My wife is happy, so that is good for me.

Maybe the cruise thing might work, as There are Cruise ships which leave from Harwich :)

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't a cruise more for older people? I have never realy thought about it to be honest but think I will for next year.

This also doesn't help. Leg room on the cattle class is a joke. We are off to Menorca again this year, which isn't so bad (2 hour flight).

I hate airports and flying and all the associated crap. However it's only a small part of the holiday.

Even better if holidaying here in the UK. Pack up the car, bicycles on the back for a week or two in the glorious UK country or seaside. Heaven. In fact I'm off to Wales for a week in the mountains with the wife.

If you're not enjoying your holidays Mr. OP then you're doing it wrong. I'm guessing your wife is picking the holidays. :D

She most certainly is picking. She enjoys them though, so a small price to pay.

I hate airports totally, especially coming back as well. Actually looking forward to my holiday to Portugal in October though.

For me, going on Holiday is a chore. The airport hassle/getting to the airport. The packing.

Then you have flying and the constant turbulance and ear popping. Then you have to get to your hotel/villa. I just find the whole thing a stress and even if we holiday in the UK I hate it.

I do holidays every year but only because the wife likes them, else I wouldn't bother.

Anybody else like me and why?

Yes! I thought I was the only one! I can't see the point, unless it's skiing :p

I completely agree with the op, they are just too much hassle. I have some great memories from holidays, but most if not all of the 'special' ones could have happened just as easily at home.

Have only really been abroad two or three times, definitely interesting but i don't get why it's such a thing. Clearly a conspiracy by the airlines to get you to spend money ;)

I couldn't disagree more. As recently as a few years ago I held a similar opinion - thought it was all a waste of money. Then I reluctantly took a proper trip and I was from that day on absolutely hooked.

If you are not enjoying it perhaps you are not chosing the right sort of trip? I could not stand the idea of getting to Luton Airport at 5am to board a charter flight to a Spanish island to then spend 2 weeks in the same resort, but other types of trip are hugely appealing. Why not try something different?

What is a "proper" trip? I am in the same mind as the OP currently, I would certainly like a few other alternate suggestions.

I don't like the thought of a standard holiday (spain/canaries/portugal etc) because I'm lazy, however once I have got there I usually have a great time.

However I really look forward to going to places that are a bit different and more interesting than a package to Tenerife.

I guess the definition of 'proper' varies for each person but for me a typical holiday will involve travelling around a country or countries and never staying in the same place for more than about 3 nights. You get to see so much more :)

See more but appreciate less?

There is no requirement to fly if you don't want to. My main trip this year will take in Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, the Austrian Alps and Switzerland and I won't board a single plane.
