*** The SKY F1 2012 Coverage Thread ***

I would say that the qualifying coverage was ok and no more, prefer BBC.
What's with the SKY pad rubbish !

While I agree with you, let's be fair, it's only the first race they've covered. Give them some time to get their eye in.

I can't remember that far back, but I'm sure the first race the BBC covered after they got F1 back from ITV wasn't as slick as their coverage of the last race for instance.

The Sky Pad 'rubbish' is just a more glam version of the old BBC 'Brundle in a studio next to a TV' that the BBC had.

Impressed with coverage, Crofty and Brundle worked well together and it was lovely to have cockpit cameras on the iPad and seeing Alonso in the gravel. :D

I miss Jake. :(

It was the total opposite to me, although I liked Jake in the first season the BBC did he has turned into a parody of himself now. The Sky presenter was prefect, asked the right question and didn't make the show about 'him' like Jake does these days.

It's always lovely seeing Alonso in the gravel.

Had a chance to see a stream of the qualifying coverage. Most of the good stuff has carried over, though that's part of the international feed so it wasn't dependent on the BBC anyway.

That Simon character who was hanging out with Damon Hill is pretty good at his job. Damon is also a decent talking head, so that part of the team looks in good shape at least.

On the other hand, Croft was terrible - if I didn't know he'd commentated F1 before I wouldn't have believed it. Not knowing that you use separate tyre sets for practice and the race is very poor, and he spent half the time talking about people's helmets. They may as well have had that bird from the Sky Pad in the box - though that would have course have eliminated the only reason for having her, as the audience wouldn't be able to see her boobs.

Did we really need to be told three times in a row that the coverage was in Dolby 5.1 surround? "No adverts in the race" includes not having your commentators put out soundbites puffing yourselves up when they should be talking about the race.

The roaming presenter - is it Ted Kravitz? - seems afraid to try and interview anybody. Alonso I'll grant is not talkative, but when you see both Sauber drivers together and don't even try to get a word out of them, why are you even there?

I'm surprised there's been some grumble about David Crofts' commentary. I've been listening to him for years on R5L when they were covering the practice sessions and think he has a great style. He genuinely gets excited and that enthusiasm really brings out the emotions of whats happening.

Plus I though he and Brundle worked together really well, certainly much better than Brundle and Legard ever did over 2 years - and this is just judging by 1 qualifying session.

Probably because the Sauber drivers aren't of any great interest to most people. Plus, if they were just going to Ted for a few seconds during the running of a Q session, then he's only got a few seconds to say something interesting.

A couple of mistakes during the first live broadcast is forgiveable IMO. I should imagine that he has to plug Sky's coverage as part of his commentary. It's like how Hamilton/Button are forced to unnaturally say 'Vodafone McLaren Mercedes' every time they mention their team.

Welcome to Sky Sports. Spend 5 minutes watching Sky Sports News and you'll be able to guess how the female half of the presenters get their jobs. Although I won't have a bad word said about Hayley McQueen :D

The problem with Crofty is that he's excited and enthusiastic about everything, including things that are unimportant or quite dull. It feels forced, at least to me. I'll concede that he works better with Brundle than Legard did, but that's not saying much - you could say the same about an inflatable woman.

EDIT: The Sauber drivers may not be all that interesting - though I'd debate the point in the case of Kobayashi, who everyone seems to like - but when you haven't spoken or even tried to speak to anyone in the whole session and a commentator has pointed this out on air, it's maybe a good idea to attempt a justification of your salary, no?

I thought the quali show was very good. At last, a commentator with some excitement (Crofty). We are missing a bit of lightheartedness, someone to counter Martin and Damon who are both a bit serious. I'd like to see Jenson take on a role there when he's had enough driving.

There did seem to be a lack of interviews with teams and drivers but maybe that all came out in the build up and post quali shows.

I'm not going to bother with an BBC stuff as it doesn't seem worth it, I can live without Eddie and David.

Andi.

I can see this is going to divide people all through the season, Will stick to the Sky coverage and might slap the BBC HD races on Sky + just in case sky miss anything interesting.

Enjoyed the coverage on a whole but there is room for improvement, It is their first shot at it though guys.

I agree.
I think it was a pretty good first shot and they're still learning. Some things they've clearly nabbed off the BBC like the moody music and rousing speech intro and standing in the pitlane shouting while loud things go by but it was their first go and they'll learn from week to week. Overall, I'm sticking with Sky for now.

I'm happy with their coverage and commentary. Hill seems to say 'urm' a lot but as long as you don't count them it's not too bad. I like Brundle as a commentator and his moving to Sky was quite high on my list of reasons to move.

I was happy to see no adverts throughout the Qualifying too. It would have been so easy for Sky to slope off to adverts in the gaps between sessions but at least this weekend they didn't do it.

I do prefer leaving the Sky+HD box deal with the recording rather than me remember to set up Windows Media Center on my PC as a couple of times it didn't wake up to record the early races.

So I will stick with Sky through the full season I think. Adverts in the build up are annoying if you are watching live I suppose but they are sometimes useful if you need a cuppa or a comfort break. A small part of me wants to get the full benefit of my £10.25 + 1TB box + HDMI cabling too.

They shouldn't miss anything from the race as there is only one TV feed that everyone gets. I'm not sure I'd want to watch all the pre and post amble in case a comment was missed.

I'm thinking more pre/post race. Someone will mention something on here and I will disagree and they will say they heard it on the bbc footage and I will have to check that footage to see for myself... you know how it is :p

Oh no, it's started, acceptance of advert permeating every facet of TV life...
You have a Sky Box, you can pause and take breaks at your leisure, now watching adverts in a show you've already paid handsomely for is ok.

I jest, it's not just aimed at you :p but still makes me sad :(
