Living close to power lines ?

I thought they are insulated so the electrons can't escape? Are you saying that electricity flows around in free air just like radio waves?

No, it's not like that. It's about producing electromagnetic waves that create a potential difference between two conductors, that's how signals are transmitted from antenna to antenna.

The power lines will have some form of em field whether they're exposed or not, I have no idea how large or powerful though.

I was looking into this when i property i wanted suffered from close power lines, i found something about increased depression and suicide rates!

Just has to be a case of statistics gone wrong there. I'd bet good money on the reason for the increased suicide and depression rates really being that the areas that have power lines running through them generally aren't the most affluent.

I don't believe all the hype about cancers or leukaemia to be honest, but the power lines I've been near have buzzed and the noise would drive me mad.

Power lines do buzz in the rain.
They don't interfer with my wifi, in fact its bloody strong.
They don't interfere with mobile signals.

You will find any survery will mention the presence of power lines, and state that no direct health effect has been demonstrated but there are some concerns.

I don't want to live near one as I might] trip I don't think any of the current research shows their to be any dangers to peoples lives. I think most people don't want to risk as their might be some shocking new research.

Wouldn't bother me at all, there's power lines, and emitters everywhere. There's one out the back of my house, bit further away.
Just stupid people being stupid and media using bad statistical "science" with nothing to back it up and scaremongering.

I think that this is a positive way to look at it, people tend to get really polarised when arguing about things like this and put up so much resistance - in my eyes no way to conduct yourself. Some people have tried to make jokes in this thread, but I don't appreciate ionic posts in something I care sohmuch about.

I can't say it would be of any great concern to me, the buzzing emitted when it rains can be a bit annoying but if you're in your house then the chances are you won't even hear it. I suppose there is an element of worry regarding whether it will affect your chances of selling later but if the price of the house is decent and already takes into account the proximity of the electricity lines then it shouldn't matter much.

I think power lines have a really high voltage so as not to have to carry such a large current. This means the power distribution works over large areas and there isn't a load of waste via heat. My interpretation of that would be they don't generate a large EM field either, so the only thing to worry about health-wise is your sanity due to the buzzing. The bad news is there's probably more EM radiation passing through you from TV, WiFi, Radio etc anyway. Someone with more time than me can confirm that though. Not that EM fields at these kind of power levels are proven to be dangerous in any way.

Otherwise, it's bad point that may make selling the property more difficult as not everyone thinks rationally.

I have no doubt that living near the powerlines is not a safety risk. But I once heard from somebody I knew that lived near power lines was that their tv signal was always awful, but that could be neither here nor there.

On the plus side you can have free lighting if you're close enough.
Most youtube videos showing this seem to be made by the tinfoil hat brigade who don't don't understand the physics, so I'd ignore whatever is said.
I think you've answered your own question really - whether the health concerns are real or not, if you're worried about being able to resell it then I'd keep looking.

I have a pylon in my garden or 2 legs of one anyway. Yes there is a buzzing in rain or fog but you can't hear it from inside, it's no problem really. It doesn't appear to effect TV mobile wifi or any signal. Does affect the house price of course but that just means you pay less when you buy it, don't know about selling it I think this house was on the market for some time before I bought it so probably puts some people off.

Plus: the power lines will have no effect on your health.

Minus: you'll struggle to find anyone who agrees with this when you come to sell.

Unfortunately the large number of scientifically illiterate people means than -ve probably outweighs the +ve.

No health effects by doing it, Yeah a minor buzzing but i doubt u will hear it from inside. Take this over a wind turbine by all means! And as above try speak to national grid and see if you can get any cash as there above your house and should really be renting the airspace.

I get paid a small amount every year about £50 I think for having the pylon in my garden. There is compensation available for wires across your property but this only gets paid once so last owners may have claimed this already.

Been living next to a set of the big mothers for the last 38 years..
Not caught cancer yet. :D
In fact I don't suffer with any of the widespread allergies a large proportion of people seem to have these days, but I put that down to the fact I wasn't wrapped in cotton wool when growing up. :D

I was taking the **** lol, if I believed the daily mail I wouldn't use a mobile, a microwave, wouldn't eat 50% of foods and would live underground in a concrete reinforced bunker surrounded with tinfoil for good measure.

Daily mail told me that tin foil causes cancer.
May want to upgrade your bunker plans :(
