Is it possible for someone who is in full time employment and pays basic tax to get hearing aids on the NHS? Or does it cost pretty much the same as if you went to someone, say, Boots and had an ear test their and they advised you of the cost of there hearing aids?

I am asking as I have been advised of an @ cost of £800 for 2 aids and think its a bit steep.

My wee brother is deaf and has been since catching meningitis twice when younger and he gets his for free on the NHS and he's in full time employment if that helps?

Been profoundly death from a very young age and always gotten my aids from from the NHS free. Although that said, may go private as the latest pair I've been given is just full of so called 'features' such as active noise cancellation which is about 3 seconds too slow to react. Still using my 8 year old Phonaks because of this hah.

Hearing aids? That's what you get if a gay person sticks his willy in your ear, isn't it?

No they are devices fitted in an ear to help those hard of hearing. I think your getting confused with HIV/AIDS but it isn't caught by having a penis put into your ear.

Yes - I'm almost certain you will be able to get hearing aids free on the NHS. Going private you will have more choice though. Don't go to boots - as far as I'm aware they just offer basic ones without sufficient customisation to your particular hearing, as they're mostly aimed at old people.

What is the particular problem with your ear/ears? And how badly is it affected? You should see an ENT consultant, they will best be able to advise you, and can arrange hearing aids if this is what is needed.

Stjosh :- humour bypass

Iirc Sweden or norway or someother cold place do hearing aids for a tenth of what we charge, enough to fly over for a week and still be a damn sight cheaper

My hearing aids were free on the NHS, though a Meniettes device would cost me several thousands of £ and I really needed one.

But trannies can get free sex changes, and obese people / heavy smokers full free health care, what a lovely system.

I don't see you paying an eye watering amount of tax every time you hear something...

I'm also pretty sure that you have to prove your gender is making you mentally ill too before you can be put forward for an op, it's not a drop in service open to all ;)

Thanks for the replies. My hearing seems to be getting worse in that I miss words or parts of a conversation, I cannot isolate someone speaking when there is someone else talking in the background.

My family are always telling me the sound is too loud on the TV etc. I have already had a hearing test carried by Specsavers and they confirmed that I have noticeable hearing loss in both ears.

I work for the NHS but not front line, in a technical support area for one of the major (soon to be defunct PCT'S) I have emailed the IT Director (who is my line manager )asking if not directly, anyone who can advise further. We do not have an in house HR it covers a large geopgraphical area. So I will have to wait and see what the outcome is from that.
Once again many thanks

You definitely need to see an ENT consultant as soon as possible then. Hearing deterioration can be due to a number of reasons, and hearing aids may not necessarily be the best course of action (eg, if it's a middle ear conductive loss). You can get referred to a consultant through your GP.

See your GP, get a hearing test booked, get free hearing aids.

My baby (ha! hese 26 next month) works full time and gets them free.
