Spec me a 5.1 system £300

I recommend getting a receiver and the best two speakers you can find within budget. Decent stereo sounds much better than cheap 5.1 - and you can always add speakers/sub later on :)

I have a Marantz PM4000 and Kef Cresta 2s at the moment

I've built a man cave and hard wired it for 5.1 with a 3D projector so I could really do with the receiver and the speakers to match

That still seems like a good price from quickly looking around.

But as above, I would recommend getting the best amp you can and add to it over time. I have just gone from an all in one solution DVD player with 5.1 speakers, to a Denon AVR and using my 2 B&W floorstanding speakers I already had (added extra speakers over time) and there is just no comparison.

Second hand/refurb? You can get the Tannoy SFX 5.1 for £170 on eBay. £130 for a second hand receiver is do-able if you're not too fussy or can find something local on eBay or avforums and can collect.

Was thinking that Onkyo kit as soon as I saw the thread title. Great choice, been nothing but happy with my Onkyo set-up.

It's likely that the Pioneer has a pasive subwoofer, for that kind of money. It's always better to have an active subwoofer. i.e. has it's own amplifier, and isn't running off the AV receivers amp.

Or at least an amp that has the option of both. Some boxsets come with a passive one but at least have a pre-out for an active one.

Well RS came down to £299 and threw in some Cambridge Audio speaker cable, unfortunately it wouldn't fit in my car so I was unboxing it at the roadside.

Also been looking at that Onkyo system & the size of the box is my major concern now its only available in store. Its not ever going to fit in the boot of my MX-5. Just how big is the ruddy thing?

Massive and it's definitely a two person job to carry it without dropping it.

The only way would be roof down in the passenger seat, but I've seen stranger

I'm going to take a trip next week hopefully & have a look. If it comes to it I guess unboxing & getting what I can in the boot & the sub in the passenger seat isn't so bad as long as it is all well protected.

Another vote for the Tannoy SFX 5.1 system.

Very good sound for the money and can be picked up off the bay cheaply too. Paired mine with a Yamaha receiver from Richer Sounds and am very happy with it as a budget set up..

Front speakers & centre you want around the height of your ears when sitting in your viewing position.

But any setup is always about compromise

So I've set it all up a bit adhoc but its all working.

88" maximum screen from a Epsom tw420 Panasonic bluray player with onkyo set up onto a painted dulux grey steel wall, gonna set up my Xbox and pc tomorrow night but now watching American gangster again but so far so good

Need to let the onkyo do its set up thing once all done.

Cheers for your help
