Can people give me suggestions of jobs involving computers? By which I mean, technically, not just using word or excel, but actually programming or designing stuff. I just want to get a feel for what kind of jobs are out there. Cheers guys.

I thought IT was the right route. I sit on a laptop all day mainly posting on these forums. I would honestly rather take a pay cut and work outside or do some manual work even if it affects my joints etc in the long run. Sitting at a desk all day sounds easy and it is but it drains me mentally and ruined the fitness I used to have.

Agreed. If somebody offers you an entry level IT role, the correct response is to turn and run.

or a support analyst....... :p

:p

To be honest, there are a thousand other ******** titles that people give themselves that work with computers to make themselves sound more important :D

I got offered the chance to become an apprentice at a very big finance company in London, but I turned it down because it can all get way too monotonous too quickly. In my opinion, I'd rather do a job I enjoyed and get paid less than do a job I despise for more moola :p

Programming is great, just make sure that you don't work for a **** firm that sucks your soul out.

I have been doing this for 4 years now and I still love it but thats because I am my own boss and the people I work with are great.

IT manager for a smallish company. You'll do a bit everything, programming, websites, support, travelling about...and you're everyone's best friend including the MD's.

A lot of the time "I am working from home ;)" - but periods of absolute hell when everything goes pear shaped!

There are more numerous and varied IT based jobs than you can imagine.

It depends if you want to design, build or maintain systems as a start of what sort of business / soft skills you need. Then you can start narrowing down what you mean by 'systems' to get to the idea of what technical skills you need.

As mentioned the interesting stuff really isn't support or coding based untill you get to the top levels (or interesting businesses)

This is pretty much what I do. It's nice because essentially you get to run things your own way, but as you've said, if the poo hits the fan, it can be hell because it's your problem!

You've also got to be pretty organised and motivated, otherwise you'll just end up sitting posting on OcUK all day!! (oops! ;))

Even within one topic, say programming, there can be a huge variety of different positions. With programming/software dev you could be anything from an underpaid, ready-t-slit-wrists deskmonkey to programming NASA robots for mars missions, developing code for banking systems processing billions of dollars, programming robots to save peoples lives, national security, etc.

For me, programming can be both very boring and very interesting just by changing the context.

Too right! If I had my time all over again I would have been a carpenter or a builder. Did a short funcky stint for a while as a builders friends lackey - loved the knocking off early, late starts, wolf whistling at MILFS - it's raining so lets have a smoke in the shed kind of stuff. Another cup of tea?
