Stamps up 20%

Not really even RM's fault, blame the Gov for making it they HAD NO CHOICE but to deliver the competitions mail on their behalf because of "fair competition laws", this wasn't anything to do with the RM management, this was forced upon them, and they are having to cover their costs from having to do this.

Spot on.

Due to pricing what actually happened was that the prime markets were taken from RM due to them not being allowed to compete and then being forced to deliver the same letters anyway.

Basically places like TNT will do the massive mail sorts for companies, and then get to pay a low fee to introduce them into the royal mail sort offices. If they pre sort to the end delivery office (ie bags per office) they get it even cheaper. This leaves the RM to do the most inefficient part of the process the physical delivery.

Previous company I worked for did exactly the bit above, outsource to TNT with the post sorted to end office and it saved a fortune.

Its competition with one arm tied behind RMs back. If this allows them to give the same discount to TNT etc and means in comparison they get a fairer rate then they have more chance.

As [TW]Fox for 60p it is not a bad service at all considering it will get it any where in the country.

Second point as someone else has brought up, how many of you actually send mail that needs a stamp?
I am a postman and I can assure you the amount of stamped mail is very little. I hardly ever see any unless its birthday/Christmas cards etc...
Rising costs of petrol and transportation and people don't expect a price rise?

I echo robskinner as well it is crazy what they get away with. I worked for UKMail briefly and they all pre sorted the mail and passed it on to Royal Mail, saved them a fortune so it's not wonder they can undercut Royal Mail. They aren't allowed to compete fairly.
The amount of times I see mail and packets come through like the packet today that has UPS slapped all over it yet Royal Mail are delivering it for them.

60p for the occasional letter to the other side of the country, of course that sounds reasonable.

Like most of you I don't send a lot of post usually, but recently had about 50 wedding invitations to hand out. Didn't fancy buying that many stamps so hand delivered most of the local ones.

The school I work at is headed towards paperless communications with parents for letters and payments. Post will be mostly the odd recreational letter and mostly parcels pretty soon.

charged me £25 to send a GFX card back to OCUK.. thats bit steep IMO.

Why on earth didn't you use a courier?

They charge like £7 to deliver a 5kg parcel next day, and they collect it from you. Far better service than royal mail.

How royal mail can fail to make a profit when they charge quadruple the rate of a courier for a parcel and don't even offer the same collection service is beyond me.

Does anyone know what the franking cost for second class will be going up to?

All here:

http://www.royalmail.com/prices2012

I sell a lot online and through eBay. I have calculated that my average billl id going to rise 40% for postage. Thats a MASSIVE hike. Not only that, but I now cannot claim any compensation for loss or damage, so Royal Mail are not now responsible for ANY of the business mail they lose or damage.

They have also got rid of the lower weight bands, so the lowest price you will pay for a packet is now £2.63 instead of £1.34 it was previously (1st class). Thats a nice 50% hike! These are business prices and absolutly mental.

These costs are of course passed onto the customer, who now gets even less value for money.

I don't think anyone is annoyed at the thought of paying 60p for a first class stamp, what they're annoyed at is a deteriorating service and the rate of the increase on top of large increases in the price of things like fuel and food. It just seems like the middle are there to be squeezed dry.
