Wheeler Dealers New Series

It seems to be how they "fix" most things. Just bodge it in such a way as people won't notice and flog it on.

Given they rarely make a profit, and when you work out that effectively the money earnt is merely your wages for spending the time doing the work, it looks almost pointless.

It is pointless, or rather it would be a pointless way for anyone looking to make money out of used cars to operate. The show is obviously designed to give a little bit of insight into how you would go about spotting and fixing certain issues with used cars yourself - hence why each car seems to be picked with a different set of problems. Ok so it's more of a broad oversight than anything in detail but it's interesting enough.

Any actual trader simply buys cars from auction or at trade value, makes sure they have a years ticket and are safe / not showing any glaring faults (well most at least try anyway), add on overheads, cost spent and a bit of profit then stick the car up for the price they'd like to make. The amount of labour that's spent on the wheeler dealer cars (even at mates rates or theoretically free labour i.e your own time at £x per hour) means that they would almost never make even the smallest of profit.

seems i missed a good episode and its not on the tube yet.

what work did they do on the m5?

i hate wheeler dealers in most case. sell it on for a meagre profit and not bother to take into account the hours of work that had to be done to the car. pointless exercise imo

what work did they do on the m5?

Fixed alternator with new bearings
Re-sprayed bonnet
Refurbed alloys
Fitted angle eye headlights
Fitted after market rear lights
New foglights
Replaced air filter with K&N panel filter
New tyres (which looked like Falken's) crying shame on an M5!!
Fixed squeaky suspension with new top mounts
Replaced faulty rear view mirror and side mirror

What have I missed?

sounds good. did they mention when they checked the engine diagnostics to see if there were any faulty components under there? would be a crying shame to have one of those in limp mode because of a duff sensor

So nothing of any real value, an M5 like that would be in need of a suspension refresh which would have been nice to see but why bother when you can fit some ****py ebay lights (the genuine ones are only 150 quid!), fit some falkens and flog it to a chav :(

Edit: what's the starring out thing about?

I supose they are doing things that will appeal to joe bloggs and not a car enthusiast. If you, for example, turned up to view it you'd probably be asking why on earth they swapped the headlights over, although i can understand why they wanted to "face lift" it.

I did I liked the rear lights apart from the smoked strip at the top, it looked a bit odd with the clear reverse lense. Why did they replace just one filter? I thought there were two?

If you google it, the car didn't actually sell. Well, if it did the guy put it back up for sale pretty sharp-ish.

Sounded beautiful though.

I read about one of the cars that was bought by a member of a forum somewhere.

They hadn't fixed it at all and just bodged it as best they could. It had since been up for sale several times with nobody actually fixing it. Shame really :(

just like any other second hand car out there. the stories i hear in my office with the way people run their cars makes you feel sorry for anyone that buy them in the future

I'm sure there are two sides to every story. After all, it's not as though they do a ground up restoration. They fix what is broken and that's pretty much it. If something unexpectedly fails shortly afterwards then that's just bad luck. You take that risk when buying a used car. Caveat Emptor.

From looking on the net, it seems to be trendy to hate the programme. A shame really. It's just a bit of light hearted fun.

but whats the point in the program? they never make money

they dont seem to do "proper" jobs on the cars (although the 928 one seemed ok)

i read elsewhere that they bought the M5 for £4k!

The program is actually about Edd showing you around different cars and doing a few jobs.

I agree, Mike is somewhat irritating at times but its what Edd does that always interests me. The first couple of series were pretty good as he was basically working out of a shed.

Now the series has developed more they obviously have more funding and some of the tools he uses a competent DIY'er probably wouldn't have at home :(

The money really is inconsequential. No one's tuning in to see how much money they make. In the early days there were quite a few bodges, but that was mostly because they had a budget of just one grand to buy the car and do it up!

The M5 was £4k because it needed a lot of work.

someone on here ought to buy a £4k M5!!

even look at my position, ive bought an old M3, must have got that six weeks ago at least. i have barely driven any miles in it yet because im still "restoring" it.

i spent hundreds on it and im not even close to finishing. i can spanner all by myself but i work 9-5, spend hours commuting, got a house im "restoring" too, so unless youre a youngster with loads of disposible time and income to pour into a car, its going to be a long drawn out process

It's quite an amusing program - the number of times Mike says "I've always had a soft spot for these...",

oh, and;

Mike: "Seller has advertised these headlamps for £500, but I'm used to bargaining; I'll get them to knock off a few hundred quid..."
Seller: <shows headlamps>
Mike: "Great, how about £300, for the trade"
Seller: "Well, they're advertised for £500, so..."
Mike: "You're driving a hard bargain, £450?"
Seller: "No.."
Mike: "£500 then? Hold out your hand fella..."

lol love it - Also hate how when he pulls up in any car you hear the handbrake going on before the car has stopped.

Class show though!

Oh and who can forget - "Well done that man" :-)

"He's actually asking a fair price. But you know what I'm like. I'm a wheeler dealer! I'm going to go in with my size tens on and bid him. Wish me luck!"

I really enjoy Wheeler Dealers and don't get all of the hate that it seems to generate.

Fair enough if it was called 'Buy old, knackered car and spend thousands getting it back to its OEM look' but it's obviously not aimed at that side of things. It has a nice blend of mechanics, eye candy and banter and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I also didn't realise that Ed made the double decker cars off the Top Gear episode where they raced the Germans/Aussies until I followed the wiki link up there ^^.

I've just realised that in one of Clarksons videos (Skip vs Shed vs Sofa) i *think* Ed China made one of those vehicles in the race... Sofa maybe?!

/edit - Yep... he's driving it, too!
