New Xbox 'won't have disc drive, launching 2013

if this is the way consoles are heading thats it for me! im sort of focusing on the xbox now over PC due to fewer updates, i was hoping consoles would still be focused this way

0.1 megabit connection? downloading games? i dont think so!

always on internet? pass!

Yup, what happened to the day of a console just pop in a game and play, consoles are just becoming pc's that you cant upgrade.

Sounds like pressure from the publishers to me, murmers coming out about robust drm / anti piracy measures on all the next gen consoles ...

The blue ray drive would give them that. Look at how few ps3 games are downloaded compared to the millions just on one new release on the Xbox.

Ps3 downloads barely register.

Surely it would have been easier to keep a hd DVD drive even if no one else used them and there was no market for selling blank ones. The games could come on them and pirating would have been a lot harder?

Always on Internet would be impossible for me, i had enough issues with drm on arcade games when I wanted to play with no Internet connection.

I've said that before and got shot down for it. They could use HD-DVD in theory. With the millions of consoles and games that they'd sell it would be worth it IMO. The only problem being that people would want a BluRay drive to buy movies.

Don't be so naive to think that is anything to do with the PS3 having a Blu Ray drive.

The fact is new games for PS3 are not easy to pirate due to the lockdown Sony have done with the console firmware and the fact you need a dongle to play the new games on higher firmware, where as on the 360 it's open season still for pirated games.

In theory yes, but does it make any sense to... no.

As I've also said before, BluRay is another selling feature for the console. It gives them the storage space they need, along with the current high-def disc format which improves it's home entertainment system credentials.

Sure many may already have a BluRay player, so feel it's not a necessity to them. But then think about how many people there would have been trying to decide between a PS3 and a 360 and went for the Sony because it had BluRay. You are still going to have many buying their first console and trying to make that decision, Microsoft would be silly not to level that decision between them and their main rival.

I'd also add that while you might think that HD-DVD is something they've just got sitting on the back burner from before... remember that the format is dead, nobody produces discs or players anymore. So there would likely be a significant cost in starting up the format again, likely far more than licensing BluRay.

I'm inclined to say it would be suicide to not include a Blu Ray drive. It's the prevailing film format... Why would you pass on that as a feature?

If both of the new consoles come with trash like this (DRM in various forms) then i'll not bother purchasing.

And if Microsoft had any sense, they'd be using HD DVD for their upcoming console if they don't wish to use BluRay.

I'm not really bothered about the keeping my machine online (it is permenantly connected anyway tbh). The only time it has ever been offline is when PSN or XBL have had issues, so I wonder what would happen in that scenario!!

If they use this kind of tactic to reduce 2nd hand sales etc, it will just mean I am more selective what games I buy and, invariably, buy less games.

Can we hold you to that?

As I said just a couple of posts above, using HD-DVD would be silly because it's a dead format, it's not even produced anymore and people want Bluray which is the current hd video medium.

Are people surprised that MS/Sony are thinking about DRM?

Look at how widespread 360 piracy is/PS3 piracy was.

It's a no brainer they would be looking at various ways to stamp it out on the next generation.

You can hold me to that. I'm not into games as much as I used to be back in the day and i've got a huge back log of games to play on both the PS3 and PC. I can assure you that if both have some sort of bull**** DRM system I won't be purchasing.

When I mentioned HD DVD, I was thinking via the typical Microsoft though process i.e not using anything Sony made/related. As for the HD video, i'm sure people wouldn't be that bothered as when the new XBox comes out, i'm confident the prices of cheap BluRay players will drop significantly. I've currently seen one for £55, i'm pretty sure in a year or so they'll be down to £40 if not lower.

Not for rural people here! A lot of people forget just how slow the net is in some places!

I keep saying I won't buy the new consoles as I want to just use my PC. The idiots on Xbox Live/PSN generally do my nut in. I was a happy gamer using my PC for single-player. :D But come announcement day at E3, I will probably cave in.

I think you've made the mistake that many others have, of thinking that they would be licensing Bluray from Sony. Sony doesn't own the format, they would be licensing it from the Bluray Disc Association.

If you think that they still wouldn't licence it... well remember how many other components in the current machine have to be licensed. It evidentially then makes whether they would chose something because of some kind of silly association with Sony a moot point.

How much does piracy technically cost MS or its platforms publishers? How much do you think it would cost to bring HD-DVD into production as a proprietary format with obvious drm/encryption fixes?

Just wondering which of those two figures is the smaller? HD-DVD doesnt deserve to come back but it could significantly combat piracy on the platform. MS doesnt even need to ignore BD as it could quite easy use a multi-laser device that deals with DVD, HD-DVD and BD which did exist (LG?) during the format wars...

I doubt it isnt something MS hasnt considered as foremost this generation theyll have to show they are fixing the major flaws to keep publishers happy, especially as their platform needs to keep those 3rd parties onside.

ps3ud0

I would think the download-only would be in place to stop the 2nd hand game market far more than piracy
