Obviously i cant say 100% that he didn't bend the hanger over xmas, but ive seen where it was stored and i doubt thats what it was. I got a couple of pics here so you guys can see what im on about.

i thought it was the bottom bit of the frame where the chain goes, but its actually the bit that goes up to the saddle. Im not sure if that part has a name

The bike shop said this was caused by "chain stretch"[/QUOTE]

Very similar thing happened to my mate a month or so ago! Gear hangar just snapped causing the derailleur to spin around, bending the frame, spokes and jamming the wheel. Lucky he wasn't going at speed.

Was wanting to go on a quick power ride later today. Weather is completely horrendous though. Although it is better than it was.

I dont see how chain stretch would cause that

But if you're going to blame it on over tightening, you need to blame your mate, it's snapped where the QR skewer compresses it, not where the bolt holding the mech goes in.

^^More or less the same thing happened to me a couple of weeks back but fortunately the hanger did it's job and I stopped in time to prevent any damage to the frame.
Hanger snapped taking the derailleur into the spokes, mangling the derailleur and bending a couple of spokes. The chain was destroyed and jammed behind the cassette.
Best thing was I was mid-audax in the middle of nowhere and couldn't recover enough of the chain to make a single speed. Had to freewheel to the nearest village and get a lift from a friend's family.

In this instance it's an expensive lesson but entirely my fault - I'd swapped wheels from the CX bike to my roadie and left the CX cassette on (12-28 rather than 11-25). The chain wasn't quite long enough and I'd hoped I'd get away with it. I didn't! :p

Need a new hanger, derailleur, chain, cables, spokes and wheel trued. Yay!

Cost me £120 to fix similar on my Boardman. Chain jammed in derailleur, bending it and the hanger into the wheel. I upgraded to 105 at the time tho.

I dont know how a stretched chain would cause that either, and im not blaming it on that or the over tightening of the hanger. Basically i just dont want my mate to be ripped off by the shop and when they said that it was caused by the chain being stretched i thought it a little suspicious, thats why i was wondering if it these hangers have a certain torque setting or something like that. If my mate accidently damaged it then fair enough he would be responsible for any fee to be paid, but seeing the way he treated it myself, it just makes me feel something isnt right

I would tell your mate to claim for the damage from his house/bike insurance policy where accidental damage is usually covered. I doubt you'll get anywhere with the bike shop.

Just received my entry details for the Ring of Kerry ride today in the post. It takes place on July 7th so I'd better start training! 180km (112miles for the Tories). Considering last year I could hardly cycle 5km and to date my farthest cycle has been 83km it's going to be quite a challenge. Plenty of hills too, but spectacular scenery! Nothing like a challenge to focus the mind. :)

What happened in the end mate? did he buy a new bike?

Long long story... but in a nut-shell:

He spoke directly to Specialized, and they requested that the shop he had bought it from (a Specialized Concept store) replace the bike free of charge. He had only ridden it twice before. The shop refused to do so. Instead he took it to another local dealer who took over the case and got a replacement directly from Specialized.

I've bought myself my first ever cycle computer. I ended up going for the Cateye commuter (£32 from CRC which was quite a good price) as apparently it has an excellent backlight (i frequently cycle during the dark, especially in the winter months). I think it'll be interesting to find out what speed i'm cycling at as atm its pure guesswork. Endomondo gives me a guesstimate, but i have a feeling the true figures will be quite different.

Shoulda taken a punt on the cycle computer that Lidl was selling the other week (£4).

It has a backlight and has your general modes like other cycle computers but what was great about this one is it will show the time whilst riding (great when you need to get somewhere in a certain time), stores settings for 2 bikes and can tell the temperature.

In fact looking at the Cateye commuter it has all the same features the Lidl one has except it can display time and temp together plus it's larger screen.

You might think ah well it's £4 it's probably **** but it's actually really good and my first one has been going for 1 year and no faults or it breaking so far.

Used it for lots of night rides and the backlight is good, don't know if it's brighter than the Cateye but it definitely makes a difference.

Am I doing it right?

@ kimi, thats a major sore one tbh, that much dmg is VERY rare but theres no real way to prove what exactly caused it but certainly its not a manufacturing defect ( ie what your warranty covers)

id stick with what i said before, your mate has bent the hanger/rear mech then bent mech + spokes = death for all and in this instance its taken a massive chunk out of the frame.

I would bite Giants hand off at the £500 frame offer as this is probably their own cost price as its massivley cheaper than my giant trade price!

Black and orange is an awesome combo, especially on a bike. Unfortunately I'm obliged to point out that your saddle should be absolutely horizontal in such pictures ;)

Just a quick update, i spoke to my mate today and he actually called Giant himself this afternoon because he was sick of the shop not returning his calls. It turns out they had sent a replacement frame to the shop on on the 22/02/12! he took the bike in the first week of Feb i think it was, but anyway, they have had the bloody thing back for over a month! its really weird, the shop never return the calls and the manager is never there when he calls up. Hes going mental now heh! anyway it makes me glad i bought a Boardman, Halfords have some bad service sometimes, but this is another level!
