Peoples thoughts on a Clio MK2 DCI 100...

Of course.

In reality it's a terrible idea which has a 90% chance of ending in tears and a 10% chance of fluking its way to being not quite as bad as it could have been.

Don't put deposits on cars you've never seen unless it's a 2 year old main dealer approved used car or something (That said the guy I sold my 335i to left a deposit but.. it was rather different). A huge amount of used cars on the market are simply **** and you never find out how **** until you see them with your own eyes. The cheaper it is the more likely it is to be a horrendous nail.

The worst thing about is as you have lost the £250 whatever happens you'll be tempted to gloss over faults and issues once you get to the sellers house. And you wont be able to negotiate on price, because he knows you'll not walk over a few hundred quid as you've already paid him £250!

But no car will be perfect for what i have got to spend. As i can not afford to buy one from a dealership and cant keep traverling all over the place to view said cars and even when if i did i wouldnt know what iam looking at :(

Sounds like you can't afford to own a total nail either. I'd rather spend the money that you're willing to use to 'fix up' a car actually buying a decent one in the first place.

Iam willing to spend up too £500 if anything needs doing on it as i think it would be worth doing that much.

I always have my dads misses clio 65 which has 65k on the clock, Which she wants 1800 for it and shes had it from new so if this car is a total nail i can fall back on that. Which still has only cost me 2050 on the chance of getting a much better spec car.

Why are you not buying this instead? It seems like a massively better buy than the other one, especially for a first car. The fact it's a 65 doesn't matter, the fact you know the owner and they've had it since new is an absolutely brilliant thing.

As if when i see this car and it could turn out to be a genuine bargin as it has 15k less miles on it A/C and is a lot more reliable and solid motor from what i read the 100 has a totally diffrent engine to the 65 and is not much more than what she is asking for hers.

First off ignore all the haters in here, they are just jealous. Typical OcUK really, if its not a BMW or a Mondeo they just hate on you.

Putting down a £250 non-refundable deposit on a privately advertised car you've never seen located some distance away from your house and priced at under the market value is a perfectly logical thing to do - thats how you get the bargains. It'll be fine, its a diesel Clio, the mpg will be so awesome it'll make up for everything else.

I'd imagine its cheap because the guy is just a nice chap who wants to give somebody a good deal. Also, the dci100 has loads of torque so it really is quicker in the real world than a 182.

This thread is awesome.

This is starting to get a bit like Fringe with the parallel universe [TW]Fox popping in and out of the forums! :D

This is his first car purchase. Yes, those of us who have been buying and selling cars for ages can see that this has DISASTER written all over it but the OP has made his decision. Personally I'd be trying to get that deposit back as soon as possible by making up an excuse as to why you can't get there, but I suspect the OP will insist on following this folly through.

I would like to see it through and see if it turns out to be good if not we live and learn ....

Anyways i wanted to know what to exspect from this if i get it and people opinions, Not my poor car buying methods lol

Given that you know that you are clueless about cars, for the love of god please take someone with you that does know something about them.

I am, My dad is then driving it back if i get it. As hes insured to drive other motors.

That's something at least. Hopefully if it is a shed he'll be blunt with you about it.
Oh, unless the car you buy is insured, your dad will not be insured to drive it. Drive Other Cars (DOC) cover on insurance does not allow you to drive an uninsured vehicle.

I checked this and they will be keeping it insured for the trip home on the 14th.

My dad is about as blunt as butter knife and hes been using his misses clio so he knows what to exspect from them so will tell me if anything seems a miss.

This is not true, it is entirely down to Xie insurer whether doc requires existing insurance. Some do some don't.

Didn't know that. Mine have always been on the condition that the other vehicle had valid insurance. You live and learn.

I have always had petrol cars, apart from plugs and coils never had to do any engine work.

I would have thought 1.2 will get 40+mpg and DCI 55ish mpg. Not a hooge difference imho

I'd dispute the second part of that statement. Actually, I'd dispute the 'lot' in the first bit.
