Muse: The Resistance - thoughts?

I got to see Muse finally twice(never got a chance before), unfortunately it was after this album was released. I don't think I've been able to listen to them at all since :(
Utterly ruined them for me.

Utterly ruined them for me.

As you are a big Radiohead fan I can understand why - Muse started to sound more like cheesy Queen and less like some of the good aspects of Yorke and Co.

I would definitely recommend anyone into muse to check out their Hullabaloo DVD, it's excellent and captures them before they went overboard on pyrotechnics and cheese. Bellamy's less overblown and more stripped down guitar approach also sounds infinitely better, he's been relative meh ever since he discovered locking tremelos.

With all my criticism, I think its worth stating how Muse can really capture my attention, they are probably my favourite band of recent times and certainly the most consistently good.

I had another listen to this album recently - what on earth is up with the guitar tones on this album. Unnatural Selection sounds so dull and dry :S

Couple of catchy songs on it but overall I think it's a load of gash (Blackholes & revelations along with it).
Though I probably say that because I was completley in love with their first 3-4 albums (Showbiz, Origin, Hullabaloo & Absolution), Origin to me was their highest peak since it has such a unique influence, every song on there is great.

It's not great, but there are some incredible songs on there.

I don't care about politics, band influence or the what not, I care about what the songs are like, and some of the songs are amazing.

In fact whilst I like all the muse albums I probably listen to the resistance the most because it suits more moods than the others.

I quite like it, but for me they're still struggling to reach the bar they set so high with Absolution and OoS.

That's the problem. If this had been their first album people would have loved it. But it's Muse, so excellence is expected, and any flaws are picked on quite hard.

And I agree about Hullabaloo, fantastic album.

Exogenesis is the most overblown pile of trash produced in years.

Awful album, and I'm a huge fan of older Muse.

It's good. They've made a mockery of almost everything, including themselves. They've gone beyond cliche. Gotta love them for that. Their live show had moving platforms on it ffs. Clearly taking the ****. No one is that much up their own ****. Brilliant.

Overblown? Yes. Completely up their own arse? Yes
Fantastic? Yes.

I've seen a few similar comments like this in mainstream reviews. I don't understand it at all. It's either good or it isn't. It can't be overblown and brilliant because the former precludes the latter.

I really liked it. But then, I'm one of those sub-human freaks who also liked Absolution and Black Holes And Revelations.

But overblown doesn't necessarily mean terrible.

When I say it's overblown I mean that it's something that hasn't been done, and is on a MUCH larger scale than any of their previous songs.

I mean more the actual definition of overblown; excessively inflated or pretentious.
