Now here is something with which I am sure we can all agree

And personally, I agree fully. If someone came up to you while you were talking to somebody else, and demanded that you stopped and spoke to them instead that very instant, it would be the height of rudeness (except in a genuine emergency). That is what mobile phones do...

People are obsessed with their smart phones so much so its scary.

You can see people itching to have it in there hand just scrolling through websites, social media sites and just doing **** all on them. I go to the pub with my mates and still get in arguements with them because as soon as there is a silence of over a few seconds they reach for their bloody phones, just put the thing away! You are not being social by being on facebook! Talk to the person in front of you!

/rant off :p

The G8 leaders were all busy this week, so an OCUK forum discussion it is...

I'm just saying, as a society we're picking on each other (people using their mobiles in an indie coffee shop demographically are sensible, hard-working and driven individuals by average). I'm sure if you sat 9 out of 10 people who do it down in a room they would all say what we have already in this thread.

Yet people in retail and customer service get talked to like absolute **** multiple times in a day and it is casually ignored because when it comes to attitude everyone is scared to take a stand and just wants to take the money instead. And that breeds acceptance and normality. And acceptance and normality breeds consistency, and all these stupid little elements of treating each other like **** snowball into this hostile, overly-defensive and rude urban society we live in 2012. So what are we doing with all this frustration? Well we're banning the 1-2% of customers who come in on their mobiles. Yeah, like that's not just a PR stunt.

Come back to me when a coffee shop owner only serves people with a smile on their face and friendly demeanor and I'll tell you it's not just a coffee shop looking for some bandwagon PR.

The worst is lemming pedestrians who talk on their mobile or text, then cross without any respect whatsoever for oncoming traffic.

The largest concentration of this is on Oxford Street. Cycling down there during busy shopping hours is fun.

hah, this annoys me at work when a customer decides to phone someone when i am trying to serve them, i dont mind if someone phones them and they answer, it could be important.

But I need to consume their product before I'm happy :D

On trains on the way home everyone is glued to their phones. If you thought it was difficult in the past chatting up a girl on the train, now it is even more difficult. As you have to compete with her iphone, which is impossible. I tried one night on the way home to talk to this one girl and she just gave me contempt and did not even look at me, i looked at her phone on the way out, she was playing bloddy bubble game. :(

Are you fishing for insults? :)

Seriously though, I used to travel by train 15 years ago, before smartphones, and nobody made eye contact then either. Talking to someone else on the train would identify you as care in the community.

No one ever wants to be on the train, they just want to get home and be done with it. It's probably in the top 10 of worst places to talk to anyone, let alone try chat them up!
