Legend of Grimrock - Dungeon Master Fan's !

Downloaded this last night, installed and was reading their claims about DRM free gaming...

Interesting, anyhow didn't get chance to play it so i'll have a go now at work... One of the plus sides to laptop gaming.. You can take your games with you..

Lets see what the fuss is about, if its like Eye of the Beholder then awesome, as that was a true classic in every single way.

A couple of handy hints for anyone new to dungeon crawling games...

Learn to use your environment to your advantage, for example in combat:

Hit enemies then sidestep or back step to avoid their attacks. If you can find an area of the map that is 4x4 squares you can keep this up forever - very useful for those packs of 4 skeletal warriors on level 3!

Standing in doorways that can be closed by a chain allows you to cut combat off if it's going badly for you - then you can rest and reopen the door to continue battering your enemy!

Don't forget to pick up torches - wandering in the dark is a pain.

One useful tip for the levels with spiders:

If you are poisoned then REST - your HP recovery while resting is faster than the damage the poison does and eventually the poison wears off!

This game is brilliant - hope you are enjoying it as much as me.

:D

Fantastic game, just worried it won't last too long :(

Suppose you could rush through it quick, I'll still on lvl 3 and its been about 5 hours lol. That damn metal door is bugging me though, still haven't worked out how to get through it.

Enjoying it though :)

They've wussed out a bit on the torches thing though. In DM, you could just about make out stuff at your feet without a torch, everything else was pitch black. Waking up in the pitch dark with something attacking you was tense stuff. There's a bit more ambient light in Grimrock even without a torch.

The lighting is brilliant though - worth putting your torch away every so often to see the effect of distant lighting.

I'm not that happy with the dim lighting... I'd like a daylight type spell like you could get in DM. The light spell produces a clearer light but it doesn't go as far as torchlight.

As for tips in fighting monsters... there's three basic tactics...

Tactic 1 ) Circling... You run around the monsters, when you are facing them everybody attacks, you then move away so that the monster can't attack you while you wait on your weapons readying again.

Tactic 2 ) Blocking... You stand in a doorway or corridor or back into a dead end so that only one group of monsters can attack you at once. You'll do this rather than circling where there are multiple groups of monsters because if you try to circle you'll get surrounded and your back row pasted.

Tactic 3 ) Retreating... Really a combination of the above two. You move backwards so that you don't get surrounded, trying to balance between not moving too far backwards, and not standing getting pasted. Ideally when the monster is walking towards you, you'll open up with attacks from your front and back row and then step back before you get hit. You can do some circling here as well when you retreat to an open room. This is what I end up doing most often.

I find the keyboard better for combat.

It seems to be a mistake maxing dex for a rogue. Unlike most other RPGs, it seems that str is still more important. Dex doesn't affect missiles or bows, just the "chance to hit" of a melee weapon.

The mouse assignment keep bugging me.

I'm constantly pressing LMB to attack rather than RMB and end up picking up my weapon and then getting it stuck. Not sure what's more intuitive. LMB to attack or RMB to move stuff around.

Casting a spell is strange too. You have to RMB to bring up the spell box and then LMB will work from thereon.

Might look into keyboard control as I'm using the keyboard for movement.

Just made it to Level 4. I'm sure there was a door I missed on Level 3 though. Said something about patience nearby but I can't recall where it was.

You won't regret it. Excellent game :D

Me and a mate (TB from here) used to play the original when we were younger (must be nearly 20 years ago. Atari ST and a couple of mattresses on the lounge floor, sweets and fizzy drinks, gaming bliss tbh.

Just hit the third floor. My rogues a bit useless right now, sitting on the back row he can't reach. Need more skill points :(

I'm beginning to wonder if I should restart without a rogue and go two fighters, two mages. Mine's feeling a bit useless at the moment.
