7970 a good upgrade?

My Sapphire 7950 OC plays BF3 at that res with everything on Ultra and I get 40fps absolute minimum (everything is smooth, even when it's busy, no jerking about at all). Might be an option as I personally think the 7970/680 are overkill unless you're running 1440p or multiple monitors.
I really don't see any games coming out within a year or two that will be as demanding as BF3 will, and don't forget, drivers are improving all the time.
Every other game I've tried the card with it just laps it up with smooth gameplay while staying at 50 degrees (Skyrim, F1 2011, SWTOR etc etc).

I really want the OC edition but can't really push that much in price. I am future proofing my PC a bit and may get another monitor at some point so if I do decide to go down that route I'll be ready.
Stunning price, the 680 should not even be a consideration. At those sort of prices the top-end stops with AMD, that is untill Nvidia counter.

To be fair if it came down to it at the same price, I'd buy a 680. I think it's better for the games I generally play. But there's not much in it. But considering the price of the 7970's now it's an absolute no brainer to get one.

Are the generic cards with stock fans, loud under load?
On the standard fan profile they become audible at 40% and quite noticable at anything beyond 50%. As long you don't mind slightly higher temperatures you can set a custom fan profile that maxes out around 45% for the best balance.
Don't go beyond 75% on the cooler though....

Probably no louder than my 5870?
I remeber how loud and hot my 3870X2 was. My god to touch the back of the card you would burn your hands.

Had a Accelero Extreme cooler on my 4870x2, was very good

They just cancelled that deal prematurely, gits.
At up to 40-50% I would say they are about even (HD5870 to HD7970). Above 50% though the HD7970 is noticeably louder.
The Accelero is a good idea although be aware the 7970 model is massive. It hangs a good 5CM over the end of the card so case clearance may be an issue.

Found another £339 for a stock card, looks like sapphire vanilla 7970. Someone lend me 340 quid pls

That was the original one, they've decided to put the discount back up. Just ordered it myself. Cracking card for £348 including delivery. Admittidly, the 680 is a better card all around, but I'm not willing to pay the extra £60 to get it. At that price the 7970 feels justified

At stock it is, but that's only because the 7970 was underclocked at stock, at release they didn't need to have a screamer of a card like Nivida did with the 680.
OC a 7970 and it will compete with 680 by winning some benches/games and losing others - there's nothing in it.
