when teachers or parents enter the room

"Children who stand up when their parents or teacher walks in the room. Real discipline, rigorous standards, hard subjects. Sports where children can learn about success and, yes, sometimes failure too," he said on Thursday during the Conservatives' local election campaign in Dumfries.

bit undecided on this, couldn't do any harm at school, could it? not sure on children standing up when their parents enter a room in the house though?

We used to do it in school.....I had not realised that it had stopped tbh.

I wouldn't expect Children to stand up in informal situations, but at school, in class and assembly I think it is a good idea. It is a relatively small thing, but it does instil a little discipline and a sense of respectful manners without being too onerous or being seen as a punishment. A little more respect and more politeness is never a bad thing.

And definitely agree about competition...all this "There are no losers" nonsense is simply mollycoddling and doesn't teach children that the real world is a difficult place and you need to work hard and strive to succeed.

Children should be seen and not heard!

That was the motto that was ushered at school when it was "Victorian" session in History. The teacher would whack the cane on the desk and every child in the room would sit up straight and Shaun something or other would start crying because he thought he really was going to get his palm smacked!

We kids behaved back then!

Yes, at school I was taught to respect teachers and others. Had to hold the door open and say Sir etc. It was certainly good for the children but a lot of the time imo it's bad life at home that is making kids bad. And this can't be fixed so easily.

In my school the discipline is high, even though it is always funny
When someone says a word when a teacher is talking DETENTION! (only with some teachers)

This man just gets worse and worse, just like his tin pot party.

Earlier today some teacher was talking on LBC and said
'I was 20 when I started teaching and some children asked if they could call me by my first name, I said yes. They said what is your name? I said SIR'

Respect is earned, not given. Addressing them by their surname is enough.

So you disrespect people until they prove otherwise? I think you will find that respect should be given until it is not deserved rather than the other way around. The default position should be that the individual deserves to be respected unless they show that they do not.

In any case, it is simply polite and shows respect to their position, which they do in fact deserve by default.

I lay money on that the majority of the naysayers are either still in school or so anti-conservative that they cannot see the wood for the trees....:p

Some teachers don't even get the school rules.
There is something called the one way system(in my school)
Then we went out of the 'out door'
and he said why are you going out of the indoor and gave me and my
friend a detention

+1

This "respect is earned" bs is extremely damaging to society as in the end no one will respect anything or anyone.

We used to have to stand at the start of class until told to sit at my secondary school. That was less than 10 years ago.

Just because we were forced to do this doesn't mean the teachers automatically gained any respect though... They got that by being bloody good teachers.
