david cameron ''children should stand up''

A society can`t function where members don`t show respect to each other. This doesn`t mean you have to earn everyone`s respect that`s impossible no?

Personally, I think society can function without respect. For example, if I were to show no respect to a teacher by remaining in my seat when being asked to stand. Doing so would bare me no consequence, neither the person I'm showing a lack of respect to. If I were to be punished for remaining seated, any consequence(s) imposed by the teacher are unjustly (mad even?), because what am I being punished for? remaining seated?

This is a purely hypothetical situation, although, it could bet realistic if taken in a literal sense.

Huh?

Can someone translate this?

Translation:

The children's elders have robbed them of their future and should not show contempt or compensation for their coming servitude to repay for their elders mistakes.

Instead they must show them a high level of respect irrelevant of what damage they have caused to the younger future life.

So basically you treat him with respect and he treats you with respect... The way it should be.

I actually lolled at that because it is so wrong and you read the daily mail too much...

so you are honestly saying you don't think there is a respect / discipline problem within the youth demographic of this country ? really ............

Other than the fact I don't read the mail or even wipe my arse with it, I think you have your stories mixed up my friend. I actually read the times as you get a prety good deal for 7 days @ £6 and you can read it on your ipad which is handy on the train

The moment the argument was lost and resulted in calling me a child doesnt?

I look far from foolish.

to begin with, who has lost this argument exactly?

And I thought you were still in school from the way you framed your replies.....hence the apology when you said you were of working age. There is no reason to descend into insult or rudeness as I have not shown you any.

How old are you, if I may ask.

Means nothing to me when I don't know you and for all I know could a street sweeper :p

I could be, however I am not and was not.....I gave my qualification as a source and the courteous thing to do is to take me at my word, as I have with you.

It is called common courtesy and mutual respect.

And here we are. Discipline =/ respect...

Discipline tells you to salute the rank, that does not mean by default you have any respect for that person.

Respect from that person has to be earned, discipline tells you how to react to that person in general. If you respect someone you will find it far easier to be disciplined around that person (or in the military case, follow their orders).

Exactly, a lot of people here are throwing them both together when it's not the case. I am sure enough he doesn't think "Damn he is a fine officer and I to be where he is".

No he will salute in autopilot mode without thought and then carry on.

Common respect should be an automatic response......

I fail to see how people cannot understand that the word 'respect' doesn't exclusively refer only to personal deference:

RESPECT
n
1. an attitude of deference, admiration, or esteem; regard
2. the state of being honoured or esteemed
3. a detail, point, or characteristic; particular he differs in some respects from his son
4. reference or relation (esp in the phrases in respect of, with respect to)
5. polite or kind regard; consideration respect for people's feelings
6. (often plural) an expression of esteem or regard (esp in the phrase pay one's respects)
vb (tr)
1. to have an attitude of esteem towards; show or have respect for to respect one's elders
2. to pay proper attention to; not violate to respect Swiss neutrality
3. to show consideration for; treat courteously or kindly
4. Archaic to concern or refer to
[from Latin rēspicere to look back, pay attention to, from re- + specere to look]

Actually I think this thread is highlighting the older/younger generation divide...

The older generation are complaining that kids should respect them by default,

Well I certainly haven't said that and I think I'm the oldest in the thread.
I don't expect normal kids in my day to day life to respect me but I expect my kids to and when I used to 'teach' I expected them to.
I also expect kids to respect their teachers and elder family members because they should be respected by default.

Since the fear of pain has been taken away discipline has disappeared.
It was quite easy in the old days, respect the teacher because if you don't you'll get pain and it worked a treat.
The trouble was I chose pain at least 5 days a week but it never did me any harm.
The only time it did me harm was when they gave me detention because I lived a long way from the school and needed 3 bus rides.

Why should your interpertation of respect be forced another person and result to punishment.

It isn't about an interpretation of respect, but adherence to a specified instruction from someone with the authority to issue it.

The punishment is for not complying with an instruction, not complying with the instruction is showing a lack of respect for the authority of the person issuing that instruction.

Castiel I am not denoting basic human resect, but your view of above basic respect which is forced.

However...

I have a question to all those in support of respect for authority and elders.

Why should the younger generation respect you for ruining their future and making over a million youth unemployed?

It should be you on both hands and knees begging for their respect and forgiveness should it not?

I'm young and when I went to school we had to stand in one or two lessons and wait for the teacher, and always in assembly we had to stand and wait for the Headmaster to walk past and tell us to sit down.

I see nothing wrong in it.
