By buying myself a V8 BMW X5 I think.
I want to push for a 4.6is or a 4.8is but don't think funds will stretch that far sadly.
considering the price of fuel at the moment and the book MPG urban figures for the 4.8 is 13.4 mpg :D Am I mad?

But the sound.... :eek::o:cool::D

This is my attempt at "class" on budget. :D

Don't know much about them yet but it appears they are pretty rock solid (front suspension bushes have been mentioned once or twice from mates in other garages I know)

Any of you lot owned one or know their foibles

I'd love an X5,especially a 4.8is.

That one would do if anybody is buying :)

My boss has had the older shape and now has the newer shape one, both 3.0D, and he seems to prefer the newer one. He says the older one was more like driving a car compared to the RR Sport he had between the X5s, but the new one sits somewhere between the two.

I enjoyed the small shot I had of his newer one. I could not be any more alien to my almera. So high up,so quiet and well put together and just a constant torque due to the newer auto box. With a big V8 upfront it would be so much more fun though :)

TLDR; Get one bought! It'll be offset by the amount you use your bike ;)

Great cars, would love a 4.8is, but not ones to be owned on a "budget". There's a reason they can be picked up for a very reasonable price these days.

Whilst the engine is pretty much bulletproof and most of the X5's issues would have been dealt with my the time the larger V8's came out, there was still some gripes over suspension and gearbox isssues.

That said, if you can find an AUC in your budget, that should give you some comfort.

Good luck!

I really don't get why anyone would bother with all those running costs in something so slow. What do you gain by pumping so much money into it?

I wouldn't say the V8 models are slow, the 4.8 manages 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. However I completely fail to see the appeal of these fugly blobs over something like a 5 Series which has far more style and class and a better drive. I suppose if you spend you day bouncing up and down kerbs it might be better...

Have a browse on Xoutpost and Xdrivers. Lots of info on there. Good sticky thread/FAQ on the E53 here :-

Trust me though, buying and running a 4.4, 4.6is or a 4.8is on a cheap "budget" is motoring suicide. In fact the same pretty much goes for the 3.0's in both petrol and oil burning flavours although there are a few differences, obviously.

But imagine how fast that engine would be in a normal car!

I can't get my bike / dive gear / camping kit in a 5 series. :D
I like 4x4's (have been thinking about a Rangey, but decided the X5 has a bit more about it and appears to have less common faults.)

I don't have to worry about "running it on a budget" when all things that go wrong will be fixed / repaired by ME. :D
I am also my own tyre fitter. The cost of the 4.8is rears is a little ball breaking though I will admit at 315x35x20 standard. Thank christ I can get a decent trade rate on Toyos

Decided to test the water with a 4.4 now, then chop it in for a 4.6/4.8 later on when I've saved up the difference..
