7970 vs 480 SLI

That is a lot of copper in there... :)

What GPU's are they ?

A pair of 3870X2 coupled with an EVGA 8800 Ultra KO. Which btw was hotter than a 480.

It took two PSUs to get it running (750w main and 450w slave to run the ultra) running GenL's physx mod.

It was pretty terrible too :D

Quadfire = pantolios.

Mind you, the LOLs I had in BF2 which seemed to eat everything you could feed it was hilarious. Something crazy like 35% faster than 5770 Crossfire :D

Wasn't my main rig of course. My main rig had the 5770CF in :)

My 480s never go over 82c with custom fan profile!

That doesn't surprise me at all. Mine are in a heat sandwich. I think the 480 is helped massively by the fact that the back of the PCB is open, allowing the top card to breathe as it would if it were in the bottom.

My 480 actually really is quiet and not really very hot either. I edited the bios with a lil overclock and lowered idle volts so that the card consume less power at idle, idles around 30c :-D

Maxed out about 70 - 79c not bad at all for stock cooler with no fan profile :P

Hmm very interesting. I wonder if EVGA would be peed at me if I did the same with the bios?

Lowering the idle voltage is definitely very appealing to me.

Edit. POV? did you buy that from AVF? :D I saw one for sale on there a couple of weeks back. Good price too !

You could just flash it back if you had any problems :p, here's the bios http://www.sendspace.com/file/193eap in case you wanna use it, I changed the vendor to read EVGA instead of Point of View.

* If you have a newer bios, it would probably be better to edit that rather than use this one *

Is your bios newer than 70.00.21.00.84 ?

Not sure. I will have a look later.

Cheers for that, will very likely give it a try. Is there a Windows based flash app for the 480? or is it command line only?

Better to use DOS for bios flashing, you need HP format utility, boot files and USB stick + NVFlash, your file.rom and once you load it type command nvflash -4 -5 -6 file.rom

Really easy, if I get chance later i'll upload the files you need..

Please yeah. The only issue I have is that my motherboard does not have IDE mode. It runs either AHCI or RAID and that's it. Due to that I've had little success with DOS based boot solutions as it simply doesn't find any drives.

Mind you, that's using the Win 98 SE CD I have to boot which uses an old Oakrom.sys for the DVD drive so yeah, can't find any :D

No worries, you should be fine mate, just set your boot device to USB. Ok so grab the pack from here http://www.sendspace.com/file/e1a4ir.

Most important thing to do is backup your original bios with GPUZ, save it in like 3 different places so you don't lose it lol.

Then if you plug in your USB and run the HP utility, point it towards the boot files from the Bios pack, this will make it a bootable device. Then once that's complete drag NVflash 5.95.0.1 onto the USB along with your new bios called GF100.rom from the pack and your old bios, rename it to old.rom or something.

Boot from the USB stick, type nvflash -4 -5 -6 gf100.rom

Than answer yes 'Y'

then wait for it to finish and go ahead and reboot that's it all done. Btw if you mess your card up don't blame me !! Haha, ive done this a 100 times before it should all be fine..

* I would do this 1 card at a time, i.e only 1 card in your system, this way if something did go wrong you can boot from the working card to reflash the second to it's original bios *

I remember flashing my 6800 GT with a 6800 Ultra bios back in the day. Don't think I'd dare do it now which is odd because I found it really simple. But back then I also used a conducting pen to join 2 points on the circuit board together to volt mod it. Those were the days :)

Quick update. Overclocked the CPU to 3.7ghz* and ran Vantage and 11 again.

Sadly I am running on 1333mhz triple channel and a bit skint, so getting it higher was hard with the ram speed.

push the CPU higher, try 24x167 (keeping the blk lower will help here) should see 4ghz easy with about 1.35volts, set the CPU pll to 1.88v

It's not as easy as that unfortunately. The board has an odd bios.

I can't set exact voltages on it, nor keep them at the same amount. All I can do is +mv to a certain extent and then watch it lower the volts all the time. It's a very strange layout tbh.

If I lowered the ram offset I could likely get it higher. TBH right now I disabled the overclock as Dirt 3 was locking up. Thing is, it wasn't the overclock it was 3dvision. When I switched views to outside the car for Gymkhana it locks up regardless.

I would upgrade the ram to make the OC easier but I'm skint. Not only that but I have to remove the cooler (NH-D14) and I don't have any TIM atm.
