Trip to New York

Bit of a thread hijack but I am also going in June,is it worth picking a camera up there(around £200 or less) or buying one before I go?

Both seem to have individual perks

We are also lookin at around $1000 maybe a little more for 6 nights stay

I already have a credit card that has 0% on foreign exchange fees so I'll take that with me.

Which card? If you have the right one then you dont need to take any of that cash.

In my last trip in over 2 weeks I withdrew just $60 in cash. You can pay for virtually everything by card, and everyone does.

You just dont need to take massive cash with you. You'll get yourself conned on exchange rate if you do that.

They just wanted to know why she had been to a few countries stamped in the passport (One was Iran). This was at JFK. They didnt ask the year before that (LAX).

Personally I'd take $100 or so (between you) with me in cash then spend the rest on card. The $100 just in case you need cash right at the start of the say and as spending money for random small things, better than having to find a cash point.

As for spending money, even $2k seems loads. Boston is probably slightly cheaper but I spent less than $400 for the 5 days I was there... That included most of the sights and whale watching, accommodation and eating out for lunch and dinner.

EDIT: But then my kind of holiday seems to be different to everyone else's idea of a holiday on this forum... That $400 was more than the rest of the month I spent there... :p

I presume it depends on whether the Immigration guy saw a stamp of interest when stamping. Both times I've been there they just opened a random page and stamped.

He said closer to 4k ! I am not sure if that is £ of $ but even if it is $, that is still $800 as a couple....which is like what? $1.50 to £1 exchange rate, that is like £550 a day?

Breakfast....Hmmm, I've had some expensive breakfast in my time but even at £30 a head, that's still £60.

Lunch
Lets be a little more generous, £50 each.

Dinner
£180 get you a epic 3 and a half hours 14 courses meal in The Fat Duck...so £360.

£20 remaining, thats enough for the subway easy.

You got to eat like that every day to hit $4k, unless you went shopping at Tiffany's and splashed $3k on some diamonds then i really struggle on how to can spend $4k going out and eat in 5 days (for a normal person). If he meant £4,000 then we still have another £1200 unaccounted for!

Sorry, just curious !

I virtually lived in New York for 2 months (opposite side on Hudson in Newport) I dont think I spent that much on food for that whole time! If you have already paid for the hotel then I have no idea how you can spend $1000 in 5 days unless you go mental buying things that arent really that much cheaper than here. In NY all the prices need 9% adding on at the till too.

I have been twice before on holidays but there is so much to do you struggle to see it all on a holiday. I thought Ellis island was good when I was there in Oct/Nov, I spent about 4 hours in just the museum - most people dont bother with the ellis island tour, especially as the statue is closed now whilst they refurb.

No point doing Rockafeller and Empire state. Personally I prefered Rockafellar centre, bit more of a story.

Agree, I prefer the view from Rockefeller, you get fantastic views down toward the Empire State Bulding, plus you can also look out over Central Park et al; plus it's usually half-as busy. As above, hit it up at sunset, fantastic place to be at that time of day.

Get to New Jersey:

Cheaply: $2 on the PATH train to Newark from WTC station
Quickly: $5 on New Jersey Transit from Penn Station (11 minutes)

Newport has a decentish mall by the path station. Newark is rough and would try and avoid, it's also a long way away 25 - 30 mins from WTC. To be honest the best malls are a long way from NYC (willowbrook and garden plaza)

Harrison is the stop next to the red bulls stadium if your interested in MLS. Tiny stadium compared to the MetLife which is massive. (NFL)

It's a Santander Zero Credit Card.

We managed ok with $1000 between the 2 of us for 5 days.

Top of the Rock is ace, Empire State is not worth it imo.

The OP must have not heard of something called a credit card! :p Barclaycard paid for my visit. They said you don't need to warn them of your travel and true to their words every where accepted it. Some place don't even check the signature or pin!

My Lloyds TSB debit card was a different matter. Used it in an ATM and all sorts of anti fraud checks went off  Major hassle sorting it out. Might want to check with your bank first.

Something you might not of heard of is the Highline a disused railways track now a park. Very nice on a sunny afternoon.

I would avoid using the subway, simply because you don't see the city that way. You'll miss loads of nice districts. Just walk or take the bus (You need a metro pass for the latter)

If possible get your tickets for everything in advance, then you can skip the massive queues and save loads of time.

I agree totally, but even with $2k you're not going to be scrimping (at least by most peoples standards! On the other hand just buying an electrical item or two would rack up $4k quite easily... People also seem to be obsessed with clothes shopping as well.

people say walk but its actually not that interesting so you'll feel like u wasted your time doing it.
NYC is an amazing city to walk around in. You won't find the same density of interesting shops and people anywhere else.

OP, walk to anywhere within 20 blocks if the weather permits it. You'll miss loads by taking the subway everywhere.

For those of you who went, did you have any trouble with the TSA?
Immigration will give you a bit of a grilling if you're a student or young and travelling alone; the presumption is that you are going to overstay your visa (which you should never do unless you want a five year ban from the US). Be ready to answer questions about what you do, which countries you've visited, where you're staying and for how long.
