Ok,

I am comming to the end of useful space on my current PC. I have an upstairs and a downstairs PC both connected together via a Asus RT-N56U router along with my Humax HDR-Fox T2. I use XBMC atm to organise my stuff. I currently have about 2TB of stuff split over the two computers along with an additional 1TB external drive so it all a bit of a mess at the momment.

What I want is something that I can connect to the network so that I can store most of my stuff so its not split up over multiple drives and I would also like some kind of redundant backup system perhaps running them in Raid. I am new to raid so would want something that is easy to setup. I suppose I would need at least 3TB of storage and would love to have enough room to add more in the future as and when required so I suppose I will need more than 2 bays. It would be nice if it worked without my main PC being on but as I never turn it off that it not important. Something with 4 drive bays would be what I am aiming for I suppose.

Another point I would like to make is that the server will be located in my loft away from were It can get broken and if I was to ever have a break in I would still have my data safe in the loft. I have power to the loft and can run a network lead to it but I would need something that once setup is easy to manage remotely perhaps from a web interface if that is possible.

What can the masses of OCUK recommend me that will be simple and fairly cheap to purchase?

HP Microserver and WHS2011 (though you can choose others OS's) should fit the bill :)

Once you've done the initial set up you can run it headless in your loft.

It supports RAID1 out of the box, but with WHS you can have it set to backup on a daily schedule to separate disks to protect against drive failure instead.

+1 microserver and WHS2011 sounds like a good call. Stick a few drives in it and itll work a treat for you.
