GG and the art of gamesmanship.

A lot of its due to the huge increase in kids playing online games and the manchildren that are everywhere.

You'll get ******** in all games, I play nearly every genre and they're always somewhere to be found.

Indeed. The no spawnkill rule is one that I learnt during my Quake years but these days not spawnkilling someone means that they shoot you as you attempt to get away from them. Suffice to say, if I'm not playing an old school game I will happily spawn kill anyone.

Controlling the spawns is a pretty core game mechanic in a lot of shooters, CoD in particular.

I sometimes wind people up, I generally only do it playfully. The mood of other players tends to set my head for the game. If someone else is trolling, I tend to troll back. If they just want to have fun, I'll have a joke with them.

I find it annoying if my team's useless on games, but I'll try and give them help before telling them they suck.

One thing I've never done though is taunt someone I've just beaten, it annoys me when someone says something along the lines of "GG easy" (as swifty said). What's the point? You've already won...Even if the person saying it is on my team, I often tell them to be nice about it. Some people find it harder to be a good winner than a good loser.

It has long gone, back when I played quake it was common curtesy to not spawn kill someone. Also in UT you could tell if someone was chatting so you left them be. Now all I see is noob this noob that it my team is poo. One over you could have a chat with folk and congratulate folk on a game well played now ppl are more likely to be called a hacker. Also the faster the game the worse the behaviour

Depends a bit - competitive quake at a high end spawn killing was all part of the game - tho most public games people didn't do it as it was more enjoyable for all.

Sportsmanship and the like have long become the exception rather than the rule, hacking is rife in many games part of the problem is the sheer number of children that are online these days (mentally as well as physical age).

I tend to treat people how I find them online these days and quite adept at making whiney/abusive kids and the like rage quit.

You just reminded me, Guild Wars was full of....children. I'll call them that regardless of their age, because that's how they were acting. Although I enjoyed the mechanics of the game, it got to the point where I said enough was enough and left them to bicker amongst themselves.

Rude and obnoxious seems to be common place for some people on the internet, likely due to the anonymity and lack of serious consequences.
It's not just online video games, although it's quite pronounced there. You'll also find it in various forums of all types. ****ing matches, if you will and all sorts of miscommunication.

I'm not sure what the solution is other than ignore it, quit the game and find a great single player game, play with friends, whichever floats your boat.
I can only speak for myself, but it's a bit of a love/hate relationship with multiplayer games.
Currently, I'm enjoying Serious Sam 3 for the single player aspect, and also a bit of multiplayer, mainly because there's no real reason for anyone to get mad at each other. Just run around, collect weapons and shoot monsters. Simple, yet incredibly fun and challenging to boot.

One that annoys me, and I see used on League Of Legends a lot is "GG Easy"

Report them.

I was reading a poll on the LoL forums where someone asked if people would pardon or punish someone saying "GG Easy" at the end or something similar. The vast majority of replies were that they would pardon unless it was a habit. If the person showed themselves to be doing that a lot, they would punish. If it was a one off or something, they would pardon.

It's easy to fall into the trap, and I guess I used to be a bad loser sometimes but I've just plain come to the realisation that all you have to do is type "GG WP" or even "GG" and just move on. I don't remember a single match I played yesterday in enough detail to care, so I just suck it up and be decent about it. It just makes everything a lot less frustrating, then you can bitch on skype with your mates about how unfair life/the game/your team/their team is xD

Way back when, the people who used to play quake dm/ q2ctf / q2jb and other mp games in that era tended to be better quality people. I think it was a mix of no mp capable consoles, cost of pc hardware and it was not always load a game and play. It was not something that the masses did. Skip xx years - mp consoles, cheaper pc's = more access for all = less of a community. People can be horrible now without fear of repercussion as there's always a new server or there unlikely to be matched up again. Is very sad, win or lose I used to say gg and pretty much every time everyone else would. Now it's either ignored or abuse is returned (hacks, cheater,l2p etc). I just keep quiet now.

To be honest, only in competitive play does it mean anything, public games why would you even bother?, unless your playing with friends.

in the early counterstrike days people always used to do it at the end if it was a good match.

i guess pc users were mainly 18+ back then though

Shephga has a point. There seems to be a much more childish player base nowadays, and an obsession with insulting anyone who kills you as skilless, or low, or nab. You cant kill anyone nowadays without at least expecting some sort of derogatory insult. Take cover and kill someone from long range? Camper! Use your head and blast someone at long range with a well placed grenade? Noob tube! Using an automatic shotgun? Spam cannon!

It comes down to that most people just cannot bare to get killed and start crying "no skill", "l2p", "noob" when someone outdoes them. It's much more mature to just suck up the fact that you were outplayed, rather than try and justify your loss with an insult appealing to whatever you consider to be skilled play.

With which I reply to in a very mature and adult way - 'so is your mum'

When playing LoL, i will say GG WP at the end of the game and mean it. I will even call out players on the other team if they have played well and say it to them directly as it made that match enjoyable.

I think it has gone hand in hand with this apparent craze to create new internet "memes". You see it on here just as much and on forums in general, not just in games. People apparently falling over themselves to come up with "cool sounding" phrases in the hope it will catch on and become a meme. That never happened back in the early days of MP gaming, as I recall memes hadn't even been thought of. But now, in a game someone says "take it", and Bob's your uncle a couple of idiots will latch on and everyone is saying it.

I think people are starting to notice this more over the past 6 months as a lot of younger or immature players from consoles are hoping on the PC bandwagon as the console cycle starts to become stale. With that they bring their attitude, which in turn rubs off onto other people and certain games, servers and communities start becoming Xbox Live all over again.

Now, I'm not trying to blame this on just console players as PC gamers do love a good troll nevermind how old they are. But on the whole its still only a small percentage of the player base which then beings to rub off on more people and as f2p games become bigger I think a lot of players get the attitude "What have I got to lose" even in normal retail titles.

Saying all of that I've been playing a bit of SMNC recently and everyone I have met there has been really polite! I'm finding it kind of disturbing actually as there is no "URG TEAM SUCKZ *lots of dirty words*", there is still some down playing to players who aren't quite as good but nothing to verbally strong and is generally very light hearted. The public chat by the server browser on the other hand...

Controlling the spawns is a pretty core game mechanic in a lot of shooters, CoD in particular.

No its not. It demonstrates how bad the coding was if people actively spawn in front of players instead of using many other free spawn points. Particularly in CoD where there are usually a lot of viable spawn points.

One major point of Domination on CoD is the way a team can control the spawn. Take two flags and lock them into their spawn around the remaining flag to win.

I agree though, there are too many instances of spawning right infront of an enemy on all the different game modes, that is not right!

I've noticed a major change in gaming etiquette in recent years, as well. It seems as though the entire PC gaming community has been hijacked by the kind of meme-quoting Reddit archetype that thinks typing stuff like "u mad?" in game over and over is entertaining and a form of 'wit'. It's tiresome and inane - I see it in almost every server I join nowadays, to some greater or lesser extent. Makes you miss the days of good-natured PC gaming communities with regular players and everyone having a good laugh. Nowadays it seems as if the public chat/voice channels in games are dominated by raging male adolescents with severe ego problems.

Internet has become cheap for the masses, I miss Wireplay, I miss Barrysworld, I do not miss the £300+ phone bills. But then it was my ISDN line I paid the bills I enjoyed the games and got to meet some interesting people.

And no kiddies, which parent would let their kids have free reign of a telephone line and creat £300+ bills? PC's are also cheaper, my first pc was £900 and was a peace of **** but it ran Quake.
