GG and the art of gamesmanship.

in the early counterstrike days people always used to do it at the end if it was a good match.

i guess pc users were mainly 18+ back then though

You must have played on good servers, I had played cs from its mod launch but can still remember a lot of whiny people :D

Always say 'gg' at the end of a CS:S game, even if I'm losing. No doubt I'll have had some fun during the course of it. Just polite really, and with CS:S it does depend on what servers you go on. Some can be full of idiots and whinging fools *cough* Teeside *cough* but the majority do seem to be mature and even when people mess around it's not over the top annoying.

Just thought id agree here. Iv also just made the change to pc gaming after many years of consoles. And the main reason was exactly the same as most. The behaviour of some of the people on there was shocking.
Iv been in, in game lobbys and heard grown guys shouting at young boys probably half thier age. Now by shouting i mean threatening to go and find them at thier homes. I mean come on its a game. you kill them they kill you.
im personally still getting used the speed of the pc over the ps3 and my kills to deaths is shocking to say the least but i find it a challenge to try and better someone who kills you wheter it be by camping as its now known or as i call it outwitting someone, or just by a lucky grenade kill. (they are the best)
There are still the odd few on pc servers but far less than other platforms. the only downside iv seen so far to pc gaming is hackers. just as bad as insults in my eyes.
But yes people are losing the main focus that it is ultimatley a GAME for entertainment and fun.

Why I've always loved tribes voice commands vgcg good game! Tribes ascend seems to have a fair few adult players that are respectful maybe they are tribes vets

Last night I was on a good server for it, kept running into a guy called flood who after a 1vs1 would say gg or vgcs ( good shot ) I even do it, took a blind mortar to the face from good knows where, instantly used vgca ( Awesome) followed by vgcs!

So yeah there are still good players about still!

With Tribes it can easily work both ways, though, as there are plenty of Taunts that can be used (and abused) to angering effect!

GG seems to be used as gloating these days , i often wonder wether the people saying it actually know what it means...

I've found this in SC2, I get cannon rushed, the opponent throws out a pre-emptive GG, but it does make it satisfying if you can float your base to the gold minerals and beat him :D

I recently bought MW3 and thought I would try MP, every games without fail it's **** team, GG easy, noob and smack talk through out and of course at the end of the game you get the verbals through your ear phones.

I'm going to have to delete MW3 I don't know whats worse, the smack talk or the ammount of hackers their are, it does seem every other game their is a hacker.

Mother jokes are the worst jokes ever, shows you to have zero respect for your own mother.

Other then the fact, that sort of joke is "old" now.

All the more reason to say it? And how the hell does it show you have no respect for your mother when you're talking about the other persons?

Anyone who takes a 'your mum' retort seriously deserves to be wound up.

Starcraft has a pretty good community and i would say about 50% of people will wish you a good game at the start.. they will then try to cannon rush you but the warmth is still there ;)

As for FPS's most of gamers are a younger rage filled audience who have grown up with the anonymity of being online... hence they are all total keyboard warriors.

I see a mix on CS:S. I get accused of hacking (as do many others) on a weekly basis because I am above average in skill, though there are still plenty of people that will say well done, or 'pld', and so on. It's not uncommon to notice the same individuals outwardly expressing their negative states of mind, time and time again.

You can never tell.

gg = good game, and GG = get good.

I play ladder on sc2 a lot, and to be honest, I only ever say gg or glhf if my opponent does before. I don't want them to have good luck or have fun, also I couldn't care less about being good mannered to them on ladder as I have no intentions of befriending them. I'm not bad mannered though, I just don't say anything.

If I believe the game was really good /close and I enjoyed it even though I lost I would say wp.

It's not a matter of gamesmanship, just that the younger generations not being brought up with respect, and it gets worse and worse as time goes on. (of course it's not JUST the kids, but mostly)

It's dead in terms on everyday gaming unless you play with people you know you wont get it often, i have -98% feedback on xbox just because of GTAIV and people not being able to handle being out skilled shall we say, people are sad and how good or bad they are at a game effects them more and more on an emotional level

It's the same reason as to why people "cheat" on online games, pure sadness. bless em they have no hope in hell.

On the old BFBC2 server I used to quickly type "Gute arbeit leute", as a nod to the old MOHAA days, but you don't really get the chance in BF3.

I always try to be polite in games. A minimum of a glhf & gg of course, but I usually try and make the odd comment on game progression - usually trying to be positive.

I just find it makes the game more enjoyable. When I come across games full of haters and elitists I leave, simple as that.

Have to say though, one thing I've noticed is that the 'lack of gamesmanship' is much more noticable in FPS games... I play probably an equal amount of RTS and FPS but the latter, imo, has so much more hate and stress seething through the majority of games I often only visit the same 2 or three servers as I know they suffer it less frequently. RTS tends to be much calmer, and with that I think the simple friendly greetings, phrases and occasional banter just follow suit.

It is, as far as I am concerned, a part of the community that exists for FPS.
I don't play many FPS these days (except Tribes, on which everyone is extremely pleasant) but when I did I played on servers I knew to avoid this ****. Playing on a server that kicks whining kids is a lot better.

Honestly, I don't say GG that much. I'll say it at the end of a Dota 2 match, and I'll say both gl hf and gg in a SC2 game, but in FPS, I don't unless my team loses.

Much of the time, people say GG in a way that I don't really find legitimate. It could be me being paranoid, but it seems often to be more of a taunt than anything else.

Some people are weird, and the internet makes it more likely for us to encounter them.

Was playing a quick bot game in LoL just for the first win bonus, and after we took the bottom tower, we both headed mid to help a Vlad take his tower. As soon as he approached he starting going mad about how mid was "his" and we needed to go away.

We took the tower and headed off up top as a result, and he just stayed mid and farmed. 3 of us took both top towers, and then headed mid as it was the team-fight phase. He started hurling abuse at us all again. We all agreed to humour him, said ok, and cleared the jungle and 2nd bottom tower.

He then gets rushed by all 5 bots in mid, cries for help, and we all ignore it. "Enjoy YOUR mid." :D

He dies, we kill them all, then roll through mid and win the match before he even respawns, haha.

Weirdly, this was a case of one idiot with no gamesmanship bringing 4 other strangers together for a laugh.

Why would you not want them to have fun? You're typical of the people that most of us in this thread are complaining about. You've no interest in being polite or friendly because there's no accountability and there's nothing in it for you (you likely will never meet them again). The whole point of this thread is that people should be polite and friendly to everyone, both IRL and in game, regardless of whether there's anything in it for them. That's what being a nice person is. Otherwise, you're being a douchebag.

In my experience the only game which has a decent proportion of sporstmanly players is SC2. There are of course a large number of idiots as well, but it's a smaller percentage than other games. That said, this is probably partly due to me being in a higher league, as I remember getting a lot more BM when I was in bronze. That seems to be where the kids are all stuck in cos they still think they lose because of balance.

Without a doubt the worst community of any game is CoD. I think we can all agree on that. When I play (not often nowadays) I just mute everyone as soon as i join a lobby. That doesn't stop the frequent "hacker" "noob" "camper" etc etc PMs I get. Meh. It saddens me that this is how people choose to behave. The problem is that these idiots outnumber the mature people, so it seems to them that this is the normal way to behave.

One of the main reasons I've stopped playing online games the last six months (that and skyrim:)). Every little coward who wouldn't dare say a thing to your face can hide behind their pc and be really brave. I used to take being called a cheater as a compliment - if I was playing that well that day that they thought I was cheating - then I must have had a good game, but it gets tiresome.

Something really wrong with the world when I actually prefer the repetitive banter with NPCs to real people! (you took an arrow where?) A clan with friends is good fun but I don't have time for praccie or clans these days so I have more fun in single player. Maybe it's sad but it's definitely true.

Even BF3 servers recommended on OCUK (tfu I think) you'd think it'd be fun. It wasn't. Moaning, stacking, baseraping, camping - none of these in single player games. After nearly ten years online, offline gaming is virtually griefing-proof. Honestly it has been brilliant.
