Of course... but I don't see that as the case here.
They could clearly afford a babysitter, but saw little point when they were only yards away, the children were asleep and they were checking routinely. Of course if there had been a case of a child kidnapped from a hotel in the news, I'm sure they wouldn't have given a second thought to getting a babysitter.
They gave the children Calpol... my Mother gave it to me often when I was a child, it's a non-prescription medicine available everywhere. It's hardly some kind of narcotic-grade sedative that only Doctor's have access to that you seem to be implying they were under.
If they were going out, the kids should have been left with someone to keep an eye on them, doesn't matter if they were checking in every now and then.
I also used to be given Calpol when I was little, though this was when I was ill... not when my parents wanted to go out for a meal and didn't want me to bother them.

So bored of this story constantly being in the news, and public money being spent on it.
It happened 5+ years ago. Yes it's a tragedy but she's not the only one. She's gone, dead or alive, she isn't going to be found.

Who says it was Calpol? If you read the Portuguse detective's book he was convinced that they gave them drugs to sleep, as in drugs they had access to as Doctor's, and not just Calpol which is why they refused to let the Police have the children tested until 3 weeks later when they said that they could which is way to late to test for anything.
In fact, his theory is that they accidently overdosed her and she died and they disposed of the body and made up the story about the kidnapping.
And wasn't the restaurant where they were over 400 yards away? Hardly just a few metres away like you say? That's like me going to the village pub and leaving the children at home by themselves. That's enough for social services and the police to prosecute in this country i beleive.
Not exactly hard to make a body dissapear buddy. lol

AGain, if you read the detective's book there was indeed an eye witness who gave a description which matched the father that he was carrying a girl with blonde hair across town 3 hours before Maddie was snatched.
Nobody but the McCann's had seen Maddie since 4 pm that day.
Big holes in their story etc.
Sniffer dogs both registered that a dead body had been in their apartment and so far, the dogs have never been wrong.

All this talk of sedatives is conspiracy theory nonsense. They may well be Doctors, but that doesn't mean they have free access to all the drugs they want. Further to that, they were travelling to a foreign country and you would be a fool to have on you prescribed drugs without a prescription, especially given their careers. What quashes it even further is that given how high profile the case became and the involvement of the UK Police, they would no doubt have checked whether the McCanns had access to any such sedatives.
I'm inclined to take anything the Portuguese Detective says with a pinch of salt, the handling of the crime scene was a total botch job.
Not helped by the McCanns though. From memory they didn;t contact the police for hours

They're both guilty, absolutely; Guilty of neglect if nothing else.
My personal opinion is they seem like deceitful individuals, the type who would stick they're nose up at anyone and not give you the time of day unless it rewarded them in some manner.
