What was it like growing up in the 80's.

That's not the impression I get these days. I don't have kids, but I'm pretty sure I had a lot more freedom than kids do now.

But you are not a kid and you don't have kids so I'm not sure why you think you'd know how different it is now to how it was then?

Your view of life then was from personal experience. Your view of life as a kid now is from the media and third and fourth hand stories.

I'm pretty sure in the 70's people used to moan about 'kids these days having no respect'.

Hmm, something I've thought of that really was better....

We had fewer channels, and that in itself is not a better thing. However there was concentrated onto those channels more talent than there is now. It also meant that when you watched something on TV most of your friends saw it too. There was no TV on demand or internet TV etc, again that in itself isn't a good thing but it did mean you had more of a shared experience. When it came to the good sitcoms on the TV virtually everybody watched it so you had fun the next day sharing catchphrases.

As for cartoons and music there was far less of it. Music wasn't as good as it was in the 90s, although music has gone downhill since. You still got manufactured music and people deciding in advance what would be played non stop. However you didn't get quite the same plagiarism as you get now. If something works now then the music industry is much faster at getting replicas out there. As for kids cartoons, having babysat my niece I'd say the British cartoons we have now are pretty good. American ones are awful, cookie cutter (to borrow their phrase) rubbish, she likes the Disney channel and it's cheaply produced rubbish.

Born in 73
Winters were snow covered
You walked to school on your own, rain or shine and if you forgot your PE kit you did it in your underpants, no one brought you the kit from home for you.
You had a paper round if you wanted money
and you went to cub scouts and knocked on doors for spare change (forgot the cause :o)
You messed around in the woods and built hideouts without fear of being anally raped
You didn't worry about getting mugged or having the **** kicked out of you
You wondered what the hell that white poo was from on the pavements.
You mowed the lawns without question
You mowed your neigbours lawns for extra pocket money
You helped wash the dishes without question
and you certainly didn't back chat your parents teachers or elders, well unless you liked getting slippered / belted or caned that is.
If you got caught by a copper doing something you shouldn't, you were dragged back to your home by the ear lobe and got more slippering / belting or caning by your parents.
Your parents thanked the police for this service!
You didn't get £1 million quids worth of Christmas presents, you got a few wooden toys, maybe a Tonka toy if you were really lucky and you were thankful.
Your parents had big hair, beards and frilly clothes and didn't sit you in front of a TV to keep you quiet.

OK bored now. :D

Nah - that was the '70s.

OP was asking about the 80s.

On you go again....

I'm certain that "kids having no respect" and "not proper music" etc is a common theme.

As for life as a kid now... I'm of course aware I'm no longer a kid, however even taking that into consideration... kids don't have the same freedom.

Either that all of the friends and work colleagues I know who have kids are raising them far too protectively compare to the norm... or when I was younger everybody I knew was raising them far less protectively compared to the norm.

The 80's were fantastic. Everything was super cool for a kid. Superb electronics were coming out, video consoles, BMX's, skateboards it was like boom moment. The 90's were OK, but a bit wierd with fashion in parts, especially the early 90's.

Everything was a lot more innocent as well in the 80's, and frankly kids just socialised more... REAL interaction and not "I waited 5 hours for you to come on facebook".

My general feeling is that family is seen as almost worthless nowadays, and companies have been allowed to push individualism on us all. Everybody is apparently someone special and can work for Nasa, whilst partying hard, sky diving, and having the coolest car/tv/handbag/shoes/clothes blah blah blah.

The best bit. The movies were freakin' awesome :-D

Those years seem like a dream now:(

Yep that was definitely the 70s for me.

The 80s were great, my favourite decade so far. In the 80s I discovered sex, drink and drugs though as the decades pass all have gone or less frequent :D

How do you know that? I saw a bunch of kids out on bikes playing today, they seemed perfectly free to me

Because I know a lot of parents now, they can't let their kids play unsupervised. They won't let their kids come home after school to an empty house.

When I was a kid that wasn't a problem.

So as I said above, either my experiences as a kid were atypical, my experiences now are atypical or things really have changed.

Im sounding like a old geezer, just like my dad but damn it it true the movies, cartoons, music was much better then. then nowadays ****. So what was it like for you old folks on this forum?

You're 18 you aren't allowed to say stuff like this.

Cartoons are still good, look at Archer for example, not to mention that as an adult you obviously won't think current kids shows are good.

Movies, the classics are remembered sure, but there were still plenty of **** movies being made, of course only the best ones are still shown and talked about, there is still good films made in this era to name a few, Midnight in Paris, Drive, The Fighter, Harry Brown, Gran Torino, OSS117, Lost in Translation.

Music, sure there are some greats from back then, but did you see the 80s? most of the chart music was awful, and there is still plenty of good stuff about now you just can't often find it in the charts.

Everything is better now, except the music.
Back then almost every band was at least listenable, if not exactly your favourite, now the entire output of Radio One makes my ears bleed.

Even Disco was better, and I can only say that word whilst holding back a waterfall of vomit.

Films are better today, toys are better today, TV is better today. Technology is much, much, much better today. Nostalgia is overrated. Not to mention there isn't the fear of nuclear anhillation hanging over you, which is a plus...

Most of it is true. Films and TV is the one area severly let down nowadays.

Everything is just a rehash. Going back when I was growing up we had, as already mentioned, films like the Karate Kid, Back to the Future, Star Wars, James Bond Series, Pale Rider, Uncle Buck, The Terminator, etc. We also had shows like Quantum Leap which I don't think has been bettered to this day.

Don't get me wrong I love some of the stuff today (Sherlock / Supernatural / Buffy / X-Files). It just seems there is a vast shortage of ideas.

M.

I remember by brother being cheeky in a shop and a random old fella clipped him around the ear and made him apologise, that wouldn't happen now I tell you.

Well I was nearly leaving school when your dad was born so thanks.

Movies, music and cartoons weren't better in the old days, they were just different.
I just hope that when I grow up (I'm 54 now) I don't have your attitude.

Films...

Remaking films seems to be a growing trend recently. The writers are running out of ideas and are now butchering the classics. Hardly an improvement on the past is it?

Music...

Is there not a lot more **** in the charts and whatever else these days? Music has been taken over by rubbish artists such as Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and a decent band these days in a lot of the population's opinion is something like One Direction. Certainly not a good thing.

Cartoons? No idea.

Do you live in the ghetto or something?

No, I completely disagree. You only managed a half dozen films across two decades, TV today is much better, considerably more choice, lots of decent programmes and the ability to Sky+/TIVO means you no longer have to rely on dodgy VCR timers working and worrying about tapes being overwritten. Also Quantum leap was rubbish (And only just something from the 80s)... :D

Kids TV is much more varied and much better than the two hours of pap we had to endure. Cinema is much more entertaining, with a much wider range of flims due to the widespread mutliplexes. Especially for kids, the sheer joy on my daughters face whilst she watched the Avengers today was great.
