FWIW a comedian who appeals to the same social demographic that the likes of the EDL and BNP recruit from isn't really the best example to counter the proposition that in general white comics will have less leeway in terms of being socially acceptable when it comes to jokes about race.

I ended up getting annoyed and not reading the full second page of this thread, but those who seem to advocate this kind of behaviour, if you were receiving this kind of abuse from anyone, how would you feel? It's unacceptable to be so damn rude and aggressive to people, nevermind the racial slur!
Well they barely use the jails for anything else, do they? you can get away with pretty much everything these days.

I'd possibly be... offended? so what nothing else happens, get over it. It's not like she has killed anyone or even physically harmed anyone, just caused offence.
While I don't condone what she said, a jail term is way over the top and a waste of tax payers money. Fine her again and send her on a diversity course.

There's a difference. Holding a banner up with some mental racist nonsense on it is legal - not fine or acceptable, but we need to tolerate it.

Seriously though a verbal attack on someone is criminal behavior. Expressing an opinion on someone is not. I think Alan Sugar is a grade A ****. It's fine for me to write him a letter, or say it to him, or express it publicly, however if I was in his face shouting it at him it would be criminal.
