***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

A DAC is a Digital To Analogue Converter. Wolfson is a company that designs DACs that's based in Edinburgh. IIRC Wolfson made the chip for 1st gen iPods but Apple dropped them and went for some other make.

As to which is better? Sound is generally subjective and what sounds good to one person may not sound so good to another. For instance I don't believe for one minute the LG sounds beautiful but that is because I'm into hifi.

Ahh, thanks for the info. I do realize sound is subjective... And by no means is LG sound beautiful compared to Hi Fi... But in comparison to the iTouch it sounded far clearer to me.

could you quote links of these side by side comparisons - I haven't seen any.

Next up we take a look at the Galaxy Nexus. While the two share very similar contours and side profiles, the older phone has a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display, while its new cousin has a 4.8-inch panel sporting the same technology. Naturally, the pixel density is slightly lower for the latter (as you can see above), but we barely noticed any difference with our own eyes during our quick hands-on. Judging by the microscopic pictures above though, it does look like Samsung's made the red sub-pixels slightly smaller, so we shall perform some more comparison tests when we review the Galaxy S III.

Sarge said the reduction in red sub pixels will lower the image quality, he's usually right as you know, and it's lower PPI. Engadget may just be talking about the sharpness difference though, it's hard to say. A lot of the write ups are pretty bad.

I've read loads of blog and website pages over the past few hours and I can't remember them all! :p

AndroidCentral however did say the colour balance seemed better than on the Nexus, which could be considered a downside for you AMOLED enthusiasts...

Myshra - have you got the S3 and Gnex in front fro a side by side screen comparison?

Indeed!

I take it you are on Talkmobile then? I am in exactly the same position as you are. This is my first contract ever (hence the 12 months, would hate to be on 24 months) but I don't see the point of upgrading early. I think it is a good time to show a bit of geek discipline and to just stick with the SGS2, which remains a great phone. I might even just keep it after my contract is up in August/September and put a cheap Giffgaff sim in it, unless another great phone is out by then that could tempt me.

Yea that's the contract.
What you're saying is the other half of the argument I'm having with myself.

However, if I'm going to tie myself into a 24 month contract, it may be better to do it now rather than in 6 months time.

Like I said it's not the same panel as in the Nexus - it should be judged when the reviews are out.

reduction in red sub pixels will lower the image quality - why is that exactly?

Ah ok. That is reassuring then. I do still fear that, because this is a Samsung specific thing, app developers will be less inclined to provide this as a high priority feature. Time will tell though. I just wish Google had devised an AirPlay style solution that worked across all Android phones. To achieve that, they could have released a comparable hub. The fact this is a Samsung specific move really seems to imply that we could see Samsung move further and further away from Android, which is a prediction I've read on various tech sites.

AirPlay is an Apple tech that I find myself using so often. The fact Android has never really had a viable alternative to this has been the main reason I haven't moved away from the iPhone since 2010. So I'm happy to see this development.
Allshare is more of a standard than a Samsung thing. I can connect to my uncle's LG SmartTV, for example using my GS2 as that TV supports the features for media sharing to work.

No, I'm actually leaving Orange next week so lets just say my work has been restricted to non-secure stuff. There's a pic of the screens side by side somewhere... I saw it on an Android site I swear.

Using smaller reds = less contrast I suspect but I'm no screen wizard sorry :(

The screen will be great - aslong as it bright like I said - Gnex is too dark for outdoors.

One X's screen is sharper - S3's will have better blacks - both are HD and should be great. Horses for courses.

Apparently the glass is better on the S3 (than the Nexus), so it should definitely have an edge there.

I never found the Gnex too dark for outdoors though? It's pretty damn bright on its highest setting.

S2 is 100cd/m2 brighter than the GNex - I love a bright screen when outdoors. One X is something like 550cd/m2 but with not as good contrast as SAMOLED.

One thing is apparent from the event last night, that Samsung dumbed it down considerably for the majority audience.

We have since learned through other channels that the audio hardware is rather epic and the screen is also of high quality as well as the front lens being Gorilla Glass 2, it’s almost a given we will learn more about other aspects too.

If they went into detail about the components inside the phone itself then I guess it would have cut into the allocated time slot they had at Earl’s Court and also the general public tuning in around the world would have yawned and switched channel because of the complexity of the details being given. You just can’t win and satisfy both sides of an audience :p

Anyway, the stand out feature IMO is wifi channel bonding. The closer we can get to full Wireless-N speeds the better. One step closer to a cable free smartphone experience :)

I've found the One X screen to be the stand out winner when outdoors, with the iPhone not far behind.

The S2 never seemed as good as the iPhone in that regard, more due to the blue-ish screen coating (whatever that is) than anything else. It showed up badly outdoors and wasn't all that great. I even found the Sensation to be better as well!

They are all usable however, and from pictures the S3 screen does look very bright and as sarge suggested, they've probably tried to make it brighter. The downside is that it means the high brightness will rag your battery. :(

They tried to copy Apple by focusing on software and did an absolutely terrible job of it. I also doubt the 'general public' were watching, it's mostly tech enthusiasts.

The S3 has delivered for me - not as good as I would have wanted but it ticks the major boxes over the S2.

People have a right to be disappointed - Samsung didn't crack this nut as well as thy should have.

Please make it stop.

Look, we know you’re not a fan of this handset but please, attempting to stop people discussing it in the S3 thread is retarded

It's pretty much exactly what Kona has said above^ And I've only posted ushering teh exact same thing.
