***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

the S3 is nowhere near as good looking as I'd hoped

Bear in mind you can easily change the looks with many back replacing covers to choose from or silicone to hide behind.

Although not as the hype led some to expect it's an excellent phone and in the long run I'm confident it will be regarded more highly than the one X however buying a one X or a Note would not be a "mistake" nor would waiting to see what Sony offer in a couple of months.

Can anyone here tell me why they are going for the S3 over the One X, beyond personal preference?

I'm terrible at making these decisions, was set on the X, but then last night has made me reconsider. In my opinion, the S3 is nowhere near as good looking as I'd hoped, by comparison to the Nexus and the S2. But everyone still seems to be saying they are getting one. I know people have different opinions on style, but I just wanted to make sure I haven't missed something big?

Storage space isn't really a concern. I love the AMOLED screen on my Desire, but thought the X screen was incredible instore.

The reasons you should go for an S3 instead (as far as I can see) are as follows:

- You like the look of it more... I don't think this is a popular reason. :p

- You want more than 32GB of storage

- You want the slightly larger, replaceable battery

- You prefer AMOLED black levels at the expense of everything else almost certainly being worse

- You are an audiophile and would value the Wolfson DAC (the X is still very good for this)

- You like faster internals

Ah, it seems you missed this one Robbo.

I'll stop posting about the One X in the S3 topic now. I'm only a newbie trying to decide. :)

I added it there, just without a link!

The only thing stopping me going to get a HTC One X today is the screen flickering issue which still hasn't been fixed. I'd take the plunge if it was, and by the time it is I guess the SGS3 will be out and I can compare them side by side.

I agree with Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5811/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-preview

Final Words
I have to be totally honest - when I saw the SGS3 design for the first time, my initial reactions were somewhat cool. The device's design is an obvious evolution of the Qualcomm-based DC-HSPA+ or LTE SGS2s such as the T-Mobile SGS2, not the radical, over-hyped, under-substantiated (and perhaps unrealistic) unibody ceramic or other magicmaterial that everyone wanted. It's the same effect we saw with the iPhone 4S - rumors build to a fever pitch, everyone keeps adding more things to the wish list, and then reality hits home when the curtain lifts. Everyone wants the impossible, but only years of manufacturing process improvement and scale brings that closer. That said, I think HTC has clearly won the industrial design and in-hand feel category this time around. The obvious comparison point is the HTC One X (Tegra 3). When I compare the two side by side, the differentiation really comes down to display, and camera. The One X LCD is beautiful, and the One X/S camera is a very good performer. Subjective UI snappiness between the two are actually very close even though the SGS3's Exynos 4 Quad clearly holds an advantage over Tegra 3, but it ends up being accessories rather than core which will define the better device.

At the end of my time with the SGS3 my mood has changed considerably for the positive. As we showed in our SGS3 performance preview, the handset is, as Samsung described it, capable of posting "superlative" benchmark numbers with its 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quad SoC. It goes without saying that even with TouchWiz running atop Android 4.0.4, the SGS3 is butter smooth, everywhere. In the time that I played with the SGS3, my impressions and attitude toward the device changed significantly, as well. I don't think 4.8" is too big, the same way I didn't think 4.65" on the Galaxy Nexus or 4.7" on the One X was too big, but there's clearly a ceiling for phones right at or around 5". Samsung also delivered on its promise of bringing the device to store shelves (at least for non US shoppers) quickly after launch, which it deserves some kudos for. The only lingering question is what exactly will be in store for the LTE devices headed to the US, and just how far away that launch is. For now though, I come away from the International SGS3 a lot more positive than I did upon initial inspection.

That seems reasonable. Though I think they could have probably delivered on more fronts than they did if they wanted to. It wasn't purely down to the 'hype train'.

Yup agreed, they've held stuff back, they probably pretty much know what their 2013/14/15 release phones are gona be stuffed with.

If they have held stuff back (I also think they have) then I imagine people tied to contracts will be a bit miffed at the situation come 6-12 months time when the announcements and leaks start filtering through, so the question is, do those people hang about or what! I imagine if they're on S2 class phones then the wait is made much easier, a no brainer even.

Retail handset users could just recycle and add a bit extra for those new handsets I guess.

They probably have but won't announce it till after the iphone 5 is announced, as we have all seen now it seems like Samsung is competing with apple directly, more than any other company and aren't too bothered by the other android manufacturers by the looks of things..........

It will be interesting to see how the audio stacks up to the one series as gsmarena and a few other sites have stated that the "S" has the best audio they have ever heard on a phone, not sure if the X is the same...........would imagine so though since there quite similar regarding camera etc.

I imagine the gs 3 will be better though.

The One X/S use the HTC image chip for both cameras - but they use the SoC's encoder for video (tegra and s4) - so different on the X and S.

Same as the audio - different hardware on both X and S.
