PC gaming back in 2004/5....

Sure am, though not until it drops down in price. There are exceptions, and in this case I thought both max payne games were excellent. :)

Agreed, but I thought your point was the quality of sequels is usually worse when they significantly change the production of it? I'm not saying it will in this case (I've got it pre-ordered too ;)).

Case in point would be C&C, though that's not around the years specified :)

Agreed. I forgot about Max Payne though, let's hope it delivers well (I haven't pre-ordered it, and I rarely do pre-order games).

Sometimes when a sequel arrives and I find myself liking it for different reasons to the first, a small part of me feels that perhaps all that was needed was a name change. :D

Stoked for rollercoaster tycoon 3 back then.

Just about the only game i was waiting on. Loved the original, the 3rd could have fell flat, but thankfully it retained the detail of the original. The only worry i had with it changing up to 3d.

Quality series, too many years ago, another would be amazing in a new engine.... not like they couldn't nickle and dime that cp out of it with social features and downloads... it's one of the pc's most loved, biggest ever ip's... with a huge dedicated niche hardcore.

Ticks all the boxes for making a ton of $

Invisible War is well underrated IMO, judged on merit I think it is fine, one of the best of the FPS/RPG hybrid genre in fact. It just isn't as good as Deus Ex, and most games that are inferior to their predecessors tend to get panned.
Maybe I benefitted from playing IW before the original so I didn't go into it with any preconceptions about what to expect. The only reason I bought Deus Ex was because I was so impressed by Invisible War.

Anyway 2004 was a real turning point for graphics as FC, D3 and HL2 all came out that year. Crysis aside (2007), I don't think we've seen such a gargantuan leap forward in graphics since (by which I mean games blowing everything before out the water - undoubtedly there has been steady progress).

That said, IMO pretty much every year has been a good year for PC gamers.

Good era for PC gaming, played a lot of the above mentioned. Rome Total War was out around that time also. The original Mafia aswell, may have been released a year or 2 before on PC but I didn't play it 'til 2004 so it counts.:o:p

Blimey, was R:TW really 2004?

I must have put hundreds of hours into that game, epic.

2004/5 was a great time for gaming

2004 is a good year with I think half life 2 and city of Heroes which I enjoyed a lot but atm I have a thing for old PC games from when I was young just picked up Metaldrome :) all I need to do is put a floopy back in to my other PC :)

Yeah I know what you mean :) The main reason I pre-ordered was the fact that the first two games come with it for free, and I've lost my discs in various house moves.

Ah you see I purchased this game on feedback alone and I wasn't all that into it. It was certainly a very good looking game at the time, but then it kinda changed and went all alien/mutant or whatever they were.. and by then I'd lost interest and didn't play it anymore...

*FarCry*

The story did go off on a tangent but it is the only game I ever completed on every difficulty I loved it so much, The multiplayer changed my gaming life forever and I actually bought my first PC after playing it for the first time, as it just totally blew me away.

Rome total war, was that 2004 as well? Got that in my steam listings, they had a bundle or total wars games in a steam sale, I must have put hours upon hours into that game alone...

Rome total war IMO was on the best total war games..

2004/5 was a great year for pc gaming indeed...

I thought Thief 3 and DX:IW were lousy sequels

Thief 2, now that was a proper stealth game! I shudder to think how insultingly bad a PC/360/PS3 Thief 4 may end up - likely some on-rails, fast paced, interactive cutscene kinect fest designed for prepubescent gamers with zero attention span.
