***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

I know, I was just trying to make light to cover my embarrassment at spoiling myself outrageously by buying this and almost certainly keeping my Note if I get Quidco and topcash discounts :o:o:o:o:o

Look ahem a bit more embarrassment I just had a mouse fumble in the bottom right corner of my screen and now what I, no doubt erroneously, call the system tray is down the left side of my monitor, how do I put this back on the bottom, I find it disconcerting out of the corner of my eye. Thanks in advance. :D

OH! ¬_¬

:o :p :D

It doesn't look bad at all in that video kona, more of a black colour than blue for the front, but the back looks blue, however, that can be easily solved with a case or replacement back/cover :p

It would have been much better IMO if they had got rid of the middle button and just had it as a touch sensitive control as well or on screen buttons instead. Still don't like the camera area one bit though, reminds me of my spica back for the camera :o

I've never weighed it but I could if there's nothing on Google.

Also I'm not bothered about the glossy back cover because I have a project idea up my sleeve to completely solve that issue :-D

Matte backed S3 anyone?!

no worries, bought one anyway :)

Ordered mine on Vodafone and got in the first 1000 orders to get the free tablet, but the more i think about it i'm tempted to see if CPW would switch me to Three and let me keep the tablet.

I get a £20% discount off the £36 contract with Vodafone however i'd be happy to pay the full £36 with Three on the one plan due to the all you can eat data. I have a three MiFi dongle which I use when im away from home at the moment, but i could just tether from my phone.

What do you think my chances are?

Your slowly coming round to the S3 ;)

Reading your earlier post there was no chance of you getting the S3... by release day your be first in queue I bet :D

I like it more than I did initially.

My earlier posts seemed more critical because I was laughing hysterically at how terrible the Samsung event was. Awful!

The thing is, the benefits of the Galaxy S 3 don't help me personally, I'd be very tempted to go for one if I watched a lot of video on my phone, but I don't.

In that situation the AMOLED and increased storage would be great, but for web browsing, looking at pictures and most apps, I can't see any downside to the IPS LCD screen (or anything else on the X) which is utterly brilliant.

I am a big Samsung fan but the GS3 hasn't got enough to tempt me away from my One X, i will wait for the I5 now.

I think the iPhone with a new design, more iOS improvements and bumped hardware will be tough to beat. Really looking forward to that.

Myshra - did you handle a S3 in final trim - I want to know if the sliver trimming around the sides are metal or plastic - A writer on the Verge says its metal.

I read somewhere that it was chrome effect plastic, but if it's metal then that's pretty awesome.

Finally caved in and ordered in blue/black/Grey Whatever Colour it is as the upgrade itch was too much after having my original Galaxy S for almost 2 years :p

Paying £26 a month for 24 months 300 mins, unltd texts and 750 MB Data on T-mobile. £59.99 Up Front with £30 back from quidco. If i had waited 2 months I probably could have got it cheaper as I have a friends and family contract for £20 a month which has more minutes (I never use them) and it has less data (which I do use). So will just cancel my other contract in July.

Cheers,
Hugest

I went round more phone shops today enquiring about when they are likely to get demo samples of the S3 in...all of them said the 30th...oh well.

Also, even on the One X you still have to zoom in to read text as I found today browsing the CNN desktop website. The browser is very fast though. I noticed weird blocky faint artefacting around images though, load up a site with an image gallery and zoom in on an image and you'll notice blockyness where gradients merge. This wasn't the case on the One S so definitely something to do with the screen on the One X.

Side by side, I thought the One S screen looked more pleasing on the whole at the same brightness (visually) especially when on a page with a white background. Colours just popped out better.

Lagom test:

On the One S and S2 I could see shades from number 3 onwards. All at about 50% brightness although on AMOLED it didn't really matter what brightness was set as black levels were the same across the range.

Strange illusion though, on the white One X I thought the screen looked nicer as the white frame offset what was onscreen nicely, it tricked my eyes into seeing a more pleasing picture whereas on the black One X the picture didn't seem to look as appealing.

Of course you'll have to zoom in to read text if it's tiny, I'm not sure why you'd expect different.

On this forum for example, I can read it zoomed out in portrait at a reasonable distance. It's not so nice on the Nexus, and impossible on other phones, aside from the iPhone due to how it bumps up text size.

I just expected to be able to read the text as on the iPhone 4 you can just about on CNN desktop, well unless CNN have changed their fonts over the last 6 months!

The iPhone is deceptive though as Safari increases font sizes, so you'll actually see about half as much text. It's good though, I like that about the iPhone. It's an excellent feature.

I actually forgot about content onscreen. I remember it now, in fact I even took a photo of the S2 and 4s side by side and the S2 fit more content into the page than the 4s. Text didn't look that much different either.

What exactly did you mean about whites on the One S screen? Surely the AMOLED pure white is considerably inferior to the LCD?

As in , if you look at Google's homepage, the white offsets the coloured lettering on the logo and is more pleasing on an AMOLED screen above lowest brightness. Depends though, some AMOLED handsets have a slight pink cast on the lowest brightness (like the HTC Desire did) while others do not.

Okay, I've got the Nexus and X both open on the Google page now at 50% brightness.

The X screen is a lot brighter at 50% for starters (so I'd probably have it on less than that).

The whites on the Nexus are not even close to being as white as the X, they look a little bit yellow if anything (pentile being exposed?). The colours don't seem much different either though I'd say they are of a marginally higher contrast on the Nexus, but it's fairly negligible. I think for the Google page, the X screen looks nicer, I don't see a problem with the lettering.

As I don't use it, I've just loaded up the CNN site on both and the main block of text down the left isn't really legible on either in portrait. Upon zooming in a little bit the text is marginally crisper on the X but again, it's not something you'd generally notice. The red banner is of a far higher contrast though, so the AMOLED is definitely better there if you prefer more punchy colours.

However, the SLCD advantage comes when you load up a high res image on both for example. I've just loaded up a picture of a tiger and you can see the individual hairs and such far better on the X than the Nexus, where they aren't particularly visible and appear as more of a 'mush'. The other thing here is that the colours seem more realistic, but don't pop like they do on the AMOLED. This could be good or bad, depending on personal preference and what you're viewing.

So, conclusion? Colours/blacks vs accurate colours and sharpness. Same old, same old.

Generally I don't really think about any of this, but I do enjoy a crisp, sharp image.

I could attempt to take pictures with my girlfriends expensive camera but I wouldn't do it justice. :o :p

Try a Nexus in store or from someone else who has one. You will find different handsets of the same model display slightly differently. It's the same old AMOLED trait where casts are displayed differently depending on batch - It's weird.

I have 2 S2s here side by side and one is bluer cast than the other. My own one is more natural and looks closer to daylight (6500k) than the other which is closer to 7500k.

For anyone interested, it will cost £499.99 at CPW although whether they are selling it SIM free or PAYG from day 1 is to be seen still. Best deal I've seen so far is with Vodafone £31p/m with 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB data. Should be available on 30th May but as soon as we get a demo one around here, I'll be sure to show off some photos :)

Should be a few days before as I was able to play with a HTC One X demo from the rep a few days before launch.
