First Car Search! Must Be Diesel

Not to mention if it's a diesel with a particulate filter (DPF), lots of short runs are going to end up with visits to the garage when it's all bunged up.

Must be a diesel? Then you are going to do lots of miles to get the savings? I guess not as it is only a run around.

Then why only looking a small cars?

Which makes me believe that the OP has fallen into the trap of common misconception that Diesel will save him ABSOLUTELY bucket loads of money in running costs just because it is a diesel.

Also first car being a diesel, with typically larger engines are not ideal for insurance

Why must it be diesel?

Sounds like his parents are buying, so it's probably some sort of daft misconception they have about the whole situation.

Most likely related to the usual 'diesel is cheaper to run init' but possibly also something along the lines of 'diesel = sensible, petrol = boy racer'?

This. I think people are only just beginning to realise this, going by the letters in the motoring section of the Telegraph.

I came hoping cars would be suggested, not to be questioned on things that are beyond my control. I know the complications of diesel engines and such, i just wanted to hear of some good choices.

People are trying to help you - in order to do that properly they need to understand why your brief is what it is, in case there are any misconceptions that are guiding you down a particular path.

Ignoring why it must be diesel for a moment, what age are you, how horrific is insurance and what do you actually want from the car? The only car I absolutely wouldn't touch without knowing either of these is the corsa, horrid things with no steering feel whatsoever.

There are no misconceptions, i have a brief which states it must be diesel. I am aware that petrol may be a better choice here, but i don't have control of that.

EDIT: Im 19, i passed by test on Wednesday the 2nd, i have a little spreadsheet of cars and their insurance groups, but choosing/finding an actual car is proving hard.

Don't pay too much attention to insurance groups, they're a varied indicator. Try running some quotes first to get a ballpark figure and go from there.

So what's your annual mileage? If it's all city driving, then something small could work best but if you are going further afield then a bigger car would be more comfortable.

I think you're all being very mean. Perhaps the mandated requirement for diesel that cannot be challenged is that he has a plentiful cheap and illegal red diesel supply?!

whats red diesel?

ill be doing mixture really, motorway driving and city driving, also my mother will use the car occasionally.

i really like the new fiestas but they are a bit too much atm
