Recently i bought a new GTX 550Ti, 1gb etc. and i also bought a new psu to compliment it (my old one was a 350W)

However I don't feel I'm getting the full potential out of my new graphics card.

The reason my theory is the PSU, is because I do admit i went cheap on it, is there a way of checking to see what the power output is or changing the output? (i spent £30-£40 on it)

Or could the problem be from something else?

I'm not a pro when it comes to computers, I'm just after upgrading it a bit so I can play GW2 and Diablo 3 happily when they come out, on medium settings minimum.

The reason being is i play WoW atm, and its recommended settings are medium, my old card was 512mb, this is a 1gb, almost double, little difference. 512 was recommended low.

(please note I've only tested on wow so far, thinking of testing on either DoW or Crysis next)

The VRAM is not the main thing, you have to look at VRAM clock, Shaders etc...
The 550ti is OK,
What PSU make is it?
EDIT: the VRAM is for the resolution etc

Hi there,

May I ask what the make and model number of this PSU is? Also, what are the specs of the rest of your system?

If you bought a 750W PSU new for £30-40 then indeed - that will be a really poor quality one (unless you got a fantastic deal). How long has it been since you bought the graphics card and PSU? If it is still within 7 working days and you bought them online then I would recommend you return both of them for a full refund using DSR.

Instead, I would go for a graphics card like this and a PSU like this.

750W for £30-£40, that's going to be something like a CIT/Powercool with no more than 40A@12v. You'd expect that to be OK for a low to mid range system.

You'd expect that if the card was starved of power then it would just crash or something.

Your graphics card will not be slowed down by your PSU. You'd know if it wasn't getting enough juice because it wouldn't work :p A 550 isn't a very powerful card so it's not going to run everything on great settings.

i know its an ace black edition, ATX2.2/2.3

Dont get me wrong, it has improved, and i bought it from an independant shop.

cant remember everything i was asked, gonna have to save, reread and edit this.

Oh god.

I just found that ace black "750W" PSU and it can be bought for £20 and it only has one 6 pin PCIE power connector.

I would strongly recommend you either send it back for a refund or put it in the bin before it breaks your other components.

Quick reply, there you are.

The reason I didn't go for a bigger graphics card (and the only reason) is due to being limited on space in my case (most of the good ones are 24cm in length, I have 23cm to play with).

As for the model number, A-750BR, if it's something else, then I'm assuming I have to pull it out to see it.

The previous graphics card was a 8600gs (i bought it from pc world, thats a built in factory thing, 3 yrs old)

PC isn't likely to be much better than the one it replaced.

Wow is more likey to be CPU limited, what CPU have you got?

i read the last few comments and dont think theres is a faster record time of anyone facepalming.

I shall order a new one immediately......

I was planning on keeping some of the money to make a whole new build :/ the shop doesnt do refunds, i asked them.

Punch them in the face and steal the cash register, or you can demand a refund and if they don't then throw the PSU in there face :)
