are the government making two massive gambles with our taxes?

i'm referring to the war in iraq and afghanistan and the olympics.

back in 2010, the figure was £20bn and that didn't include wages or payouts to injured soldiers.

i can't find a more up to date figure but i've just seen a story on the news about how our country is failing with the supply of care for the elderley and disabled and surely the money would be better spent on these matters?

are the government looking at the war as an investment (obtaining land and resources) or are they looking at it purely as keeping us safe? or, are they dressing it up as a mixture of both?

i can't overlook the fact that surely that money could've been spent on developing areas. couple this with the ridiculous amount the olympics has cost, am i showing my economic's novice badge when i tend to think this is all an incredible waste of money or will it all be worth it in the end?

the olympics had a budget of £9.3bn, there's no way it wont go over that, infact i wouldn't mind putting a £10 on it doubling.

danny boyle apparently has a budget of about £40m for producing the opening and closing shows? well, it was £40m until he went and asked for another £40m! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16030785

i remember the millenium dome being called ''the envy of the world, people will come and see it'' did they, or was it a criminal amount of money down the toilet, saved by rebranding by o2.

i understand a large part of the olympic budget will bring much needed improvements to the capital. any other parts of the country going to benefit?

Don't get me started on how our taxes are stolen from us and then frittered away.

I find the whole situation abhorrent frankly.

Have to agree. Is it not "london 2012"? I may be wrong on this but surely how does this benefit the rest of the country? daylight robbery!

+1.

I fail to see how we have the money for Wars/Olympics but not enough to look after our vulnerable or tax cuts for the lowest earners.

yea what a joke!

the olympics is taking place all over the country so why call it london 2012? because london is the only thing mps care about

I'll take that £10 bet that the Olympics would go over budget by 100%.

Hoist by one's own petard? ;)

The current budget of £9.3bn is almost four times the estimated cost of staging the Games at the time of the bid in 2005.

To be fair, I could build everyone on these forums a top-end PC for only £500. As long as I'm allowed to quadruple my budget like the Olympics can, without any repercussions. :)

Its hard to gauge the value for money of the olympics before they have started.

Not really it isn't, have the Olympics ever made the host country £9bn? No. China reportedly made a loss on the 2008 games and the 2004 games cost Greece so much they had to back out of a ~£4bn deal to buy Eurofighters form us.

Olympics will be good in terms of entertainment for TWO weeks but the legacy will be a failure, building all the **** in London, the riots last year should what the people of London think about this country.

Total waste of money, in 2008 we should have told the Olympic community we don't want to host it and should have scraped the building and spending.
