President Obama Endorses Gay Marriage

Essentially this is the unknown problem :(

On other forums I see a lot of posts about married people struggling with the issue of fancying other people, yet quite a number of people tell them to go for it if they are unhappy. Nobody seems to speak out for the values marriage is supposed to represent (like not shagging anyone you feel like).

To a kid, a marriage is a man and a woman and that's an easily understandable unit, they really have to be a bit older to understand that Bill and Ben share a bed.

It just seems like a pointless complication for what one group thinks is sacrosanct and the other group probably thinks is just a legal bit of paper.

LGBT groups aren't identifying with the religious implications, so why do they want the ceremony to sound the same?
Civil partnerships are the same thing, so I'd have to ask what was so awful about those.

Next step Polygamy?

You know marriage wasn't always a religious ceremony?

It's simply about culture and i suspect that's why its an issue to some.

It might be the next step and I have no problem with that either as these things don't actually effect anyone else.
For me marriage has no "values", it's really what you make of it. I just don't frankly care what people do in their daily life as long as it doesn't effect anyone else.
Some gays want to be able to marry, even if there isn't much of a difference they still want to use the term and it isn't going to cause any harm to others so I don't see why not. We actually have the best LGBT rights in Europe but we can still improve.
Cultural values can change and I don't see any harm that kids can be taught marriage between bob and bill.

Lol. Are you serious?
I wasn't alive a couple of centuries ago. Yes it was still a church ceremony but I do often wonder how people thought about it.
Same way that funerals have Christian sayings but it is not often thought of as a religious ceremony.

Polygamic marriages are already a tradition within Islam where a man can have multiple wives. Also a lot of couples these days, married or not, straight or gay have open polygamic relationships, and even enjoy swinging and orgies.

Oh, and atheists have much better sex than theists.

I don't think it's right.

I have no problem with people who are gay, but it's my view that you should not have same sex couples. Man + woman is the natural order of things as such (yes I know we can extropolate and get daft on this one), but society wouldn't survive if everyone was gay in any normal sense of the word.

Not everyone is going to be gay though.
You can't just turn gay, you are born gay. I think that if we look in the past, we had just about as many gays as we do now but you wouldn't say so if you would get your head chopped off would you?

And you think that's acceptable? Obviously we are all porned out here ;-) :-P

(I'll wait for someone to call me Grandad or prude :D)

So every 'gay' is born gay. What a load of horse ****. (no offence intended).

I wasn't born gay, but circumstances could very easily have lead me down the 'lifestyle'. I propose that a lot of people choose to be gay, like people choose a religion.

society wouldn't survive if we all shagged the amount we do without birth control either, we'd be like Africa in a few years.

You think we should ban that for being unnatural too?

And rape used to be called surprise sex :)
Really whatever has been the norm for the past few hundred years is our culture and anything that isn't is a deviation from that.

For me marriage has no "values", it's really what you make of it. I just don't frankly care what people do in their daily life as long as it doesn't effect anyone else.
Marriage is a public ceremony, so essentially we are expected as a group to maintain a group's standards, otherwise marriage would have no aspirational standing within society if it was just a freeforall.

We all want to be seen to be doing the right thing, if marriage was a swingers party then nobody would bother getting married as it would have no moral kudos.

So you're saying you consciously chose at some point to fancy women and right now you could make yourself feel sexually attracted to men?

Do you have any evidence to back that up?

Hence my comment on extrapolating what I said, because I knew someone would start with a comment like this

To add to the above regarding election prospects, he has also established a pretty neat contrast between Etch-a-Sketch Romney - who rolled over like a good dog when the American Family Foundation raised a racket and fired his foreign advisor (who happened to be gay) vs. Obama who has just made a fairly bold statement.

Also, Obama is on the right side of history IMO, I think there is a decent chance that bans on same-sex marriage will be deemed unconstitutional at some point in the near to medium-term future and the demographics of acceptance are only moving in one direction.

So when did you choose to be straight and is it still an active choice every morning? :)

well you made a frankly insane comment about society surviving if everyone was gay, you already made the most extreme and stupid extrapolation so what diud you really expect?

Us all to go "my god he;s right if we all become gay tomorrow we'll be extinct we must do something about the gays!!"??
