Guild Wars 2

From,
http://www.arena.net/blog/mike-obrien-on-the-guild-wars-2-beta

The other week we hosted our first Beta Weekend Event, when hundreds of thousands of players who pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 got their first chance to play the game. This was a huge milestone for ArenaNet; with no NDAs and no press embargoes, the beta version of Guild Wars 2 would have to stand on its own before the full force of the Internet.

I think it’s safe to say that the response was overwhelming in more ways than one. Firstly, the number of people who pre-purchased the game far exceeded our expectations, and we had to temporarily disable pre-purchases. In the end that wasn’t enough, and even with 48 worlds we didn’t have enough server capacity to meet the huge demand.

Fortunately, the vast majority of players were able to get into the game and experience Guild Wars 2 in all its glory. Seeing Tyria come alive, with players interacting with dynamic events or engaging in epic World vs. World battles, was an amazing experience. We’ve highlighted some of the great coverage coming out of the Beta Weekend in another blog post, but suffice it say that we were blown away by the reaction from the community. The positive feedback just strengthens our resolve to deliver the best game possible.

This was definitely a real beta, designed to find problems, gather player input, and learn what work still needs to be done before we ship the game. We’ve listened to your feedback and we’re making some important improvements to the game for the next Beta Weekend Event.

At the same time, we’re also working on server capacity to make sure that we’re prepared for the even greater flood of players who will participate in the next Beta. To that end, we’ve announced a Stress Test on Monday May 14th to test some changes we’ve implemented. This 7-hour test event, which runs from 11 AM to 6 PM PDT (-7 GMT) is open to all players who have pre-purchased Guild Wars 2. The good news is that we’re not wiping characters for this test; we’re using the same build that we used in the first Beta Weekend Event, so you’ll be able to pick up right where you left off. For more information about the Stress Test, log in to the Beta Forums. Please join us on May 14 if you can.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your support—every time you participate in our test events you help make the game better. We’ll see you in-game!

You spent months plugging a game based on a film with a tribe of teddy bears in it! Now stop trolling.

You completely missed my point.

I was pointing out that regardless of genre, you can't really claim something is childish, because they all are.

SWTOR has aliens with upside down faces etc

GW has talking rabbits, dogs and fairies.

WoW has talking panda's.

There all as childish as each other.

..SNIP..

I guess that explains why no one has it in stock. I wonder when they will re-enable pre-purchase again. Lets hope the stress test goes well!

Scooby Do / Pluto?

Puss in Boots / Garfield

Fairies....well fairies .... Tinkerbell.

Just as childish as each other in the end.

Did you not read the rest of my post?

I'm not keen on anything like that in games. I will play guild wars 2 and tolerate what I dislike.

Kung fu Panda's are slightly different in context to Star Wars universe. Stop generalising.

Why are people so defensive! I simply just don't like Panda's doing Kung fu!

What do people make of the digital deluxe "extras"? having not played the original GW I've no idea if they're actually worth paying extra for, if they are on par with other games then I'm guessing not.

Wife wants to get me the pre-order for my birthday, probably as it means she'd get the TV to herself more often :P

If you look at the various items, only the elite skill, and the minature Rylock are permanent. The other items are one shot deals, U use them and they're gone. I'm personally hoping that there was going to be something more (like the Divine Aura from the GW1 Collectors).

If money is tight, I wouldn't bother, as the extra's are pretty meh.

Hopefully the mistfire wolf spell is a little weaker than the others. Not so much it's unusable but it'd be unfair if it was balanced and suited a specific class well and only people that paid extra got access to it. And I say that as someone that's pre-purchased the DD edition.

They're only childish if you assign them as such. Rather than being childish, silly, or immature, it is important to examine them from a lore and setting perspective.

As for the Pandaren, they have been established as part of Warcraft lore since long before World of Warcraft and as such are not childish, but in fact, appropriate to the world and setting.

Same goes for Guild Wars. Talking about the Sylvari as fairies isn't far wrong - however there is lore to explain their existence and they are not an anomolous presence but rather a well-explained and 'canon' entity.

Inappropriate would be to suddenly have Counter-Terrorists of the style of Counter Strike running around Tyria placing C4 and sniping people from behind crates. They serve no function, no logical purpose and can't be explained by the lore of the game.

You would have a larger case for saying that they would be childish rather than a race of cat-like people (Charr) or fairy-like people (Sylvari) or indeed Panda-style humanoids (Pandaren).

I wouldn't mind if they were balanced with the racial/class skills so that it provides no "extra benefit" to those who paid more, but rather doesn't **** all over them either. I imagine all the racial/class elites will have their own specific class leanings and situational benefits which would make the Mistfire Wolf no different really other than looking different (i.e. perhaps be a kind of 'neutral' elite, or for example instead of it being the only x-type elemental elite, have it in addition to an x-type elemental elite so it essentially just becomes a skin/slightly different effect but it doesn't put others at a disadvantage).

Ivnvasion of the WoWnubs time again?

Please, WoW is a childish kids game all around, the graphics are pathetic, and kungfu pandas ... Well just look at how many dislikes the trailers got on YouTube.

If you want to cry about you much you love WoW, there's a thread about that game isn't there?

tbh, most of the classes in game already have summonable pets of some form or other.

Rangers, Necromancers, Mesmers, Guardians, Engineers (and I think Elementalists) all have a item or creature that they can summon. The Mistfire Wolf, is probably likely balanced by being an Elite skil, which means you can only use it from Level 30 upwards.

And here we go again.

In. your. opinion. (which seems to be heavily contested in every thread you post in by the way, perhaps you need to change it a bit :p)

The point was - it will probably be weaker than class elites, like the racial elites are, because it is essentially being sold.

I dont think it's a great idea overall though, something like the prophecies hand glow would have been better. If the skill is powerful then it's a balance issue and if not it's used by people who want to feel special? I dont know.

NCSoft have confirmed they will keep my support ticket open until the region has been corrected on the account. As soon as that occurs I will post here (look to months if not years ;) )
