Drink driving

But for the purposes of enforcement, a blanket ban on a limit which most people are likely to be affected seems like a pragmatic approach, don't you agree?

A pragmatic approach to enforcement is required yes - but as this thread confirms people will happily punch out their friends for wanting to drive after 2 pints.

Or that's how it appears. People take sensible advice as fact and react accordingly.

Personally, I take more of an issue that people are willing to take such a risk with their and others lives. When you make a mistake in a car, often the consequences are severe. It's this blind arrogance that annoys me more than anything else.

That's measuring blood alcohol, not the effect it has on their ability to drive.

A contributory factor in all cases I'd agree but I'd rather be driven by an alcoholic at twice the legal limit than a tee-total at half the limit.

And I'd rather be driven by someone who has 0 alcohol in their blood.

I find the attitude to drink (not drunk) driving quite interesting - it doesn't appear to have a scientific basis, if it did society would be as angry at people driving without sleep - more so in fact.

Are you suggesting we do nothing just because we can't enforce everything?

Not at all, I have no problem with the laws and how they are enforced - in fact if they could be enforced more regularly it would be good for everybody.

I just find the rage of the common man whenever drink driving is mentioned confusing, I don't get it. Feels all too much like brainwashing to me.

tell him you'll drive for safety reasons (blag anything to get him to give you his keys), then go hide his keys and tell the **** to walk to the shop.

i cannot stand people who even contemplate driving while under the influence. ridiculous.

In future carry around a draft Will naming you as sole benefactor and get him to sign so if he does die or whatever then at least you get all his stuff!

No excuse for drink driving & I would just not let him drive, If it took a smack in the mouth, So be it.

I guess I get that rage. To me, I don't see how anybody could let a drop of alcohol pass their lips (despite how much they think it won't bother them...) before getting into a car. It makes no sense to me at all. Driving is incredibly dangerous anyway, so why risk impairing your ability even 0.0001% when it could kill somebody...or yourself.

If someone wants to be stupid enough to drink drive and hurt, possibly kill themselves in the process, so be it.

It's not that simple however. I am more concerned about hurting, even killing, an innocent that can arise from this as others have said.

I knew someone who used to drink and drive. We aren't friends anymore. He was irresponsible in most aspects of his life.

even just people not paying attention. its a strange one alright

IMHO the best thing to do in this situation is to call a taxi, yes it might cost a bit, and you might have to pay if you're friend doesn't - but for £15 or so it's well worth not risking you and you're friends lives.

If that's not an option then definitely do not get into the car, it's just like the old saying from your parents "If your friend jumped off a cliff, would you?".

I agree to a point about the seemingly irrational rage, however when people mention drink driving I assume it is after more than two pints... and I don't know anyone who can have more than two pints and not have their reactions impaired. And if you think you know these people, you're wrong.

I thought you could get prosecuted for knowingly getting into the car with someone over the limit, so the option of accompanying the friend isn't the wisest one.

Additionally, to all these people saying 'knock him out' etc, it's easier said than done. I'm one of those people who won't drink if I'm going to drive (what's the point - a half is like opening a bag of crisps and having a single crisp), but it's not a simple answer. I abhor drink driving, but I wouldn't call the police on a friend who set off in his car when I knew he was over the limit. They can take the consequences of their own decisions.

Get new mates.

Also, I'd knock him out rather than let him drive. YMMV.

this... although i would just knock them out for being a complete idiot, rather than for there sake of not driving.

Isn't there a reward for shopping a drunk driver to Crimestoppers? Call them up, get reward money, use it to buy cigarettes to give to your mate so he can avoid bum rape in prison.
